And this is supposed to go in our stock housing?? This is a general forum post not specific 3rd gen (unless you have the BMW conversion, which you can purchase a set of angels for it instead of homeade)

Sure you can purchase ... and even pay somebody to have 'em installed ... or you can do it yourself.
In my case I purchased "old style" E36s (without angel eye) for $30 on ebay. And I'm not in position to purchase anything else extra and pay $$$ for it.

Where else it can be used? - in round fog lights for example.
But yes, mostly it is for BMW conversion headlights on 3d gen max.

BTW, why such an attitude???

brandon90gxe did that in his BMW lights a while back and it looked pretty good

for stock headlights, it probably wouldn't be worth the effort since it wouldn't be seen through the glass very easily

I want to try it out on my extra set of stock maxima headlights just to see if it works.... I wonder if it would work in a square/rectangle... and I wonder if that would even look cool... it may even be something I could put where my foglights used to be... I'm glad I have some time off before going back to school

I did that in MY BMW headlights, and they looked fairly good, as well (see my website - shameless plug). Of course, my first effort had crappy LED bulbs and no notches - which resulted in not-so-good imagery. I've recently redid them, so I'll get some pics up once the weather clears up a bit.

Some gauge rings would be pretty sweet as long as they weren't too bright.

I just bought all the required supplies.
Here is a description, if anybody interested:

1. LEDs (x10 in the package; 4000mcd) for US$8.49 shipped, from ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...tem=2583962251
2. Extruded clear acrylic round rod (diameter 3/8"; 6 feet long) for CAD$4.50 (US$3.41) from local "plastics" shop.
3. Resistors (x5) for CAD$4.00 (US$3.00) shipped, bought online.
Total: US$14.90 (to make 4 angel eyes)

Everything looks fine, except (from my PERSONAL experience) a couple of notable differences:
  1. LED's should probably be in whatever color you eventually want the angel eyes to be in - I chose white, but you may want something else. Also, I'd HIGHLY recommend getting a brighter LED. 4000mcd isn't all that bright, IMO
  2. Follow the instructions CAREFULLY about shaping the rods once you heat them. I warped two totally out of whack, my first time out...
  3. You're gonna need more than 5 resistors, bro. One resistor per LED, with 2 LEDs per rod. 4 rods = 8 LEDs/resistors

Thanks for helping out - I'll be extra carefull with rods
Talking of resistors - I'm going to use one per 2 LEDS. So It shouldn't be a problem. I plan to place 'em outside of headlights (if it goes out - it'll be easier to replace without taking out the whole headlight).
I'm not sure (I really have no idea) if 4000mcd is enough ... I thought of 10000 ones but decided it is too bright.
Talking of the color ... I just like how blue ones shine ... but it is legal, right? - and I don't have to stick with white LEDs?

blue being legal is something you need to check.
Blue lights are illegal in illinois

Yeah, cuz "Johnny Law" will turn on his OWN version of blue lights - and you really DON'T want that kinda publicity.

One resistor per every two LED's should be ok for this application. With enough resistance, you should be able to run the bulbs in series and use just one.

As for the brightness issue, I was of the same mind as you at first. But I started out with 5000mcd white bulbs. Then once I got to look at how bright they were (and after laziness dwindled), I went up to 10,000mcd. Now, I'm getting the look I was after.

do yourself a favor and DO NOT stare at those LED's. I've done it plenty of times (soo purdy), the brighter they are the worse it is.

and the UV ones, big no no.
