Fuel injector removal from fuel rail.

I am having a really hard time getting the old fuel injectors off the fuel rail. Does anyone have any ideas? These are from a 92se if that matters. I want to salvage them and send them to be cleaned. They are off my parts car and they will go on my 93se. I have already cracked a couple of the plastic caps that go on the tip. Also the top part is hard to grab without breaking some of the plastic near the top where the tip that sticks out that I think is the ground. I think they have replacements for the plastic caps at the place I am sending them. www.cleaninjectors.com They said they would replace all the O rings.

Thanks for any ideas.

David

get a 13mm deep socket (i think that's the size)...slide it over the bottom (pintle end) of the injector. you'll notice it hits the metal body of the injector. get a small hammer and tap the socket and it should give u enough force to get the injector out. do not use a lot of force. the pintle cap will normally crack so don't worry. as long as the tip is ok you're good to go.

also make sure they company does side flow injectors. if no then they won't be able to flow test/balance it.

Thanks Dan. I will try and do accordingly. I will check with them on the side flow issue.

I used a vise, and placed the injector head in the vise. While pulling and twisting they come out pretty easily.

Yeah Dave I got your message the other day, I have no experience removing our injectors from the rail. The most I've ever done was remove both rails with the injectors still inside, this was when I did the cyl head/VTC's. You seem to have some good leads from other members, so get to it

Dave, Don't forget to clean the fuel rail while the injectors are out. I used a q-tip and acetone. Its important to remove all the old o-ring residue and any baked on crud, thats the stuff that will cut your new o-ring during installation.

I used massive WD40 and a pair of screwdrivers to pry them out. The bench vice method is interesting. I've probably done 12-13 injector removals with the screwdrivers and I'm decent at it but you WILL sorta mangle the bottom of the injector.

I used a 8mm socket to push the injector out. The FSM said don't pull but push. There's a good reason for it. B/c my connectors were so brittle, I tried removing one of my known bad injectors first and it completely broke in two. I was really careful with it too. But I guess since I live in Vegas, rubber and plastic doesn't last long in this dry heat.

So i just used lots of WD40 and a pair of pliers to spin the injector around to free it up a bit. Then I push down on the fuel rail with the 8mm on the pintle. Yes, it cracked the cap, but I found a place that carried them.

Little tip, NO auto parts store in town will have it. I had to get them from Reno, NV. I had to send him full pics and measurements and he found a match. About $1 a cap. Not bad.

http://www.ccfuelinjection.com/index.html

That's the place I found them if anybody is interested.

Thanks Aaron. The guy I am sending it to said he would replace all the pintle caps and the o rings when he checks them all out and cleans them. Thanks for the advice on getting them out. I should have posted this before I started but I did not realize how much of a pain they would be.

Eric, Thanks for the info on cleaning the rails. I was wondering about that.

Craig, I twisted and turned with the pliers and messed up the plastic (non-electrical part) during the process. I had started trying the tap out but when I cracked the cap I thought I had messed up the whole injector. Did not realize that cap was replaceable.

Anyone have any suggestions on cleaning out the intake plenum while I have it off?

Lots of brake cleaner. Like 2 or 3 cans should be enough. Lots of paper rags too.

If you are not removing the lower intake for any reason, then you can sorta try to wipe it clean without dropping a SINGLE piece of dirt or brake cleaner down there. Brake cleaner doesn't belong in a motor.

Use carb cleaner. It won't harm a motor
