Thermostat question

I am replacing the thermostat because my heat sucks. I don't know which one to get, there is a 160 degree and a 180 degree thermostat. I looked on the FAQ board but didn't find anything.

There should on be a 170 and 180 available. What brand is that 160 that you found?

I would reccomend you get the 170, if you live in the lower half of the US. Get the 180 if you live in areas that get extremely cold, far north. I'm in NY and have a 170.

Another thing is that stant thermostates are not fail safe thermostates. So it might be a good idea to spend the couple extra $$ and get the fail safe from nissan or beck/arnley.

I'm guessing fail safe means that it fails open so the engine does not overheat? The 160 was Autozone brand. The 180 was considered a medium temp thermostat on their computer.

You actually found a Tstat that is 160? Autozone? I am going to check that tomorrow. I had to find a Tstat made for another car that was 160 and fit it in my car.

Pep Boys and all the other places I checked, only had 170 and 180 Stant Tstats. I tested 3 - 170 Stant Tstats and they all opened at 180. I tested 2 - 180 Tstats and they opened at 180.

So I had to find a 160 Tstat, which opened at 160. But they didn't have a 160 Tstat for the Maxima, so i found a 63mm one and made it fit. 64mm is what our Maxima needs. But i was still able to make it seal.

I know Nismo makes a 150 Tstat for our Maxima. I believe Courtesy Nissan carries them.

Oh yeah, Paul89SE, can you please give me the part number for the 160 Tstat you found? I am very interested in that b/c last time I checked AutoZone, it wouldn't list the temp ratings. Their computer only said low and medium. Or something like that. Thanks man.

Wow Aaron, thats some really interesting info there.

I have a brand new Beck/arnly 170 thermo sitting around, maybe I'll test it. I've been meaning to replace the stant thats in the car right now (also 170)

Paul, 180 is actually the factory thermostate. Nissan can out with a technical service bulliten saying that for better performance to use the 170 thermo.

Thats really pathetic, I guess the manufacturer didn't know what they were doing when they were asked to start making a 170 thermo from the old 180.

I don't know the part number but it was Autozone brand and was not fail-safe. Yeah, the 180 degree thermostats suck. Still do not have heat. I've tried everything and that was the last resort.
