VE Max is a hot commodity!
VE Max is a hot commodity!
I stopped by my local Nissan dealership to pick up some pamphlets on the Xterra and Sentra. One of the salesman asked what i was looking for and what kind of car I drove. Long story short the dealership offered to buy my max right there on the spot. I guess they get A Lot of calls about used 3rd (VE) and 4th gen used maximas...enough that they are willing to pay cash for any they find. He asked how much I would part with it for and I threw out 3000 and that I wasnt really looking to get rid of it....he didnt say ok to that but he said theyd still like to buy it if I change my mind. Hooray for Maximas...YaaaY!
I'm not selling it just yet... I'm looking for another good condition maxima body to put my other engine and tranny in... this car has an intermittant stalling problem that just recently has started to come back... so rather than spend more money to fix the engine, rust (not that bad, but rusted through in 2 places, one is the size of a dime on the drivers door and one is a hole on the bottom of the "SE" black section under the drivers door), and change the color(not a huge fan of the white, I'm just not feeling it) I would rather just find a better one... Well now on to your question about price I was going to try to get what I paid for it in the fall... around 2k... but first I need to find another car
I have a Black 92 SE 5spd. It has 75k on it. I hear this is a great find. Everything on this car works. The interior is mint and the exterior is near mint. Has a brand new set of Bridgestones. I was wondering how much I would be able to sell this car for? I also have a set of silver TSW 9 spoke rims wrapped with Nitto Extreme NT555 235/40/18's. Also has a Remote start pager alarm.

... ... hopefully i'll find one in Texas
I always get lots of comments (mostly positive) on my car. Especially because it's red. Most people (primarily Honduh drivers) don't even know about the VE, let alone a red one!
I've had some people offer me more than I paid for it, but I really like the car and I am still kicking myself for getting rid of my first VE 5-speed. I actually liked that one better.

Contrary to your belief Dave, I've had the same experience. If they were really not that popular, why would they say they really wanted your car? Because that's one hell of a bad sales technique. If you KNOW they want your car, you would have to now pay me almost retail to get it from me. People actually want 3-gens Dave.

wow, i guess I got a really good deal. $2350 for a 92 5speed with only 70000 miles. I have to put a new exhaust in eventually and i think the water pump needs replacing. it drives really great and except for this hesitation thing I love the car.

I think that people who know what our cars our (especially VE 5-speeds) will seek them out and some will pay more for a good one. Not many four door cars can be had for <$3000 that have all of the performance and luxury options ours do. Look at all of the similar cars from the same era (Camry, Accord, Taurus, Legend etc). Other than an SHO Taurus, none of those are as sporty. Many of the competitors aren't as appointed with luxury items. If you get into BMW and Mercedes, you are looking at RWD (bad for those in the snowy parts) and usually more expensive all the way around, both in initial cost and upkeep.

Dave's right, bro. New car dealers will try anything to get you to buy that new car. Trust me, they won't overpay by much, if at all, on your 'trade'. Then they try to stick you on the new car and add-ons. Every time I go in to look at new Dodge trucks, all of a sudden my 99 Ram 4X4 is the TRUCK OF THE MONTH! They can't get enough of 'em to sell - everybody wants one. Yeah, right!
Who in the heck is going to a Nissan dealer and clamoring for a 93 Maxima with 140K miles? Get real.

Here's how it typically goes. They say "wow, that is a really nice Maxima. We could give an amazing trade because it's in such good condition." I say "no thanks, I'm keeping it. I'm here getting parts." Thier eyes blink and then it's on to the next window shopper.
I read a great article on Edmunds about dealer ploys to lure unsuspecting customers in and one of their favorite tactics is to make the customer think they have something the dealer really wants. This makes the unsuspecting customer feel special and gives them the notion that they may actually be getting a really good deal. The dealer may up the trade in allowance a little more, but they'll make up for it in hidden financing charges, increased vehicle price, fees, and other charges they work into the equation. Believe what you want, but I don't believe for a second that a dealer considers any Maxima a special car especially an older Maxima. New car dealerships prefer not to keep sub 97+ cars on their lot because they typically make little money of them due to age, mileage, etc. You can be pretty certain if you're trading in a sub 97 Maxima, it's going to auction later on in the week. The only sub 97 cars I could see staying on a new car dealer lot would be sought after cars with good resale or high selling potential like an 94-96 Impala SS, Mustang Cobra, SS/WS6 F-Bodies, Corvettes, Buick Grand Nationals, Lexus, Mercedes, BMW, to name a few.
I see 92-94 VE 5 speed/autos with 80-120K miles in the Kansas City Star and Autotrader (covers within 300 miles of KC) on a regular basis and none of them are showing higher than normal resale. They typically sell for $800-1500 less than a 95 Maxima which sounds about right.
BTW, here's a sweet deal for a VE 5 speed with only 57K miles:

They won't overpay by MUCH?
Hey if they want to play that way, so be it. I wouldn't let my car go for any less than high retail if the dealer said they wanted it. I also wouldn't let them highball me on the new car either.
I see 3-gen Nissans on dealer lots frequently. Not with high miles but 3-gens never the less.

Yep, they'll give you a 'good' deal on your beater trade-in and then STICK it to ya somehow, someway on the rest of the deal (see Dave's post above). If you're not the type of new car customer they can stick it too, then you won't even get a sniff of a decent price on your 3rd gen - no matter how nice it is. That's just bidness as usual at your local new car dealership.

The previous owner probably had custom wheels, then found some cheapo GXE wheels to use when he traded it in. I noticed the windows were tinted, so it probably had other things (wheels, etc).
I don't know if $6k is a "sweet" deal. I think $3500-$4000 or so would be a sweet deal. The full retail (high book) is $6500, but I doubt many people would pay that much for an 11-year old car. It is rare to find one with that low miles, though.
I think that our cars are often sought after, but likely not by dealerships. They usually just want to make a buck, regardless of what car you drive or buy or whatever.

The former owner of the low miler engine I have. 60k, bought his for about $7 grand. I believe it had about 55k when he bought it. Unfortunately he totalled it soon after(reason why I have the engine
)
I had someone rear end me last year. Granted I had mods and this low miler engine, but let's just say I got paid. ie.. my car back plus that asking price for that gray metallic car.
