Wheel fitament problem...

I just bought a set of G35 rims w/Bridgestone 215/55R17s from lophix. I tried to install them on my 92 GXE today, and only got as far as the driver's side rear - it's barely hitting the strut assembly. I'm pretty sure it's just the side of the tire that's hitting the little half-moon thing sticking out from the bottom of the spring retainer, but I can't get my head back in there to see for sure.

That's the stock wheel back on there, by the way...

Can I just use some wheel spacers? Any ideas on what size? I thought these would just be a +2 kinda deal, but they are bigger overall. However, lophix had these on his lowered 3rd gen with no problems at all... Oh, and as far as I know, I have the stock suspension (172k on it though).

These are the wheels/tires I bought... http://members.***.net/94se/Shopping%20Cart.htm

no spacers here...unless the rear sway does something for it....Another thing though: I actually DO have the same strut housing you have on the rear, so the lowering doesn't sound like it would be the problem. i think your best best would be to jack the rear up and actually see. One more thing: put it on, and try it out. I can almost guarantee it will be fine (from the reygarcia experiment )

Jack up the car and actually see what?
I want to just put it on and try it out, but I also don't want to have the tire blow out on the 2.25 hr drive to school on Tuesday morning...

are you on aim right now?

guess not. well by jacking the rear up with the wheel on, you can raise the wheel (from under, push up by hand) and see if it actually touches. Like I said, apart from wheel to wheel turning, it was trouble free on my 91 and it was pretty much the same as any other 3rd gen out there. Kinda worrysome when you sell an item and it seems like stuff isn't going to fit by looking. In any case, let me know what you decide to do and we can go from there. But it has to be relatively soon as school starts on thursday for me.

well i have a 89 max and i moved up in rim and tire size also. i had the same prob, what i had to have done was that little small piece on the rear strut assembly the part that the tire is resting on. I had it cut on both sides. before my tires would rub, but i never drove the car with the new set up until i had the cut made. The cut will give you like 3 or 4 inch clearence more than enough otherwise u will rub on that small piece. let me know it that helps? I didnt use any spacers just that small alteration, and I have had no probs no rubbing at all!!!
