Full coverage or liablity?

I only have liability ($850 p/year NYC) because I figure 10 year old car... why bother, but as I contemplate putting more $$$ into the car I’ve been thinking otherwise. What do you guys do?

Your deductable will probably $500 anyway, probably not worth it. Comprehensive is similar to full coverage but covers theft and vandalism.

most insurance companies will only cover a few hundred dollars of mods if any unless you pay more for it. if you're just dumping in more $$$ for repairs, you should remember that a cheap car does not go up in value with more time at the mechanic, no matter how much money you dump into it.

check and see the price for increased coverage and the kbb prices in your area. you need to see if you can aford to replace the car if it's totaled and if the insurance is worth it.

i pay about 1500 a year for liability

if i do some drastic changes i will get full coverage and have the car apraised for the true value ie 4000 turbo and maybe a $biult motor$ down the line

i have a bad tendancy of wrecking cars although i havnt been in an accident in over a year and a half and i feel im a much better driver now at 20 that i was at 16 or 18 but still ive had some very close calles and i dont want to chance it

the good news is i turn 21 in may so hopfully my insurance will drop to like 1200 a year

I pay alittle over $4000 each year for the basic insurance. Wreckless driving on my record.

I think it was if I make it to 20 years old with out a ticket or accident/etc then I see a big *** drop in my rates. It will go to like $1500 full coverage, so I think I'll just take that extra $2500 and dump it in the max at that time (or invest it, I dunno).

Looks like most 3rd gen's are just under basic coverage. Wow 1100 for full coverage!! That’s great.

I wounder if it would even be worth it to go with full coverage. Probably wouldn’t get much in the event that my max was totaled.

How is it possible for someone in NY to have any kind of car insurance under $2000 if your under the age of 25. I've been paying $2500 and that is the lowest quote I got from anyone, and thats only for liability.

I just turned 25 and switched to coverage from esurance.com

My 92SE has Full coverage and a rider to cover the mods and stereo.

The '89 GXE has liability and uninsured motorist.

I have $250 deductables for everything. Up to $75 towing. No loner (With two cars, I don't need one)

I pay about $1250 a year. For the last 5 years or so, I was still on my parents policy. I had full coverage, and paid about $1400 per year for only one car at a time.

I have full coverage. Its $240 per mo. So, 2800 every year.

Btw, I'm 18. No speeding tickets (that are on my record, hehe) yet.

I think I get a break on insurance this year too...hmm....

I'm 18, $1300 per year (well, $655 every 6 months) for liability only with no tickets or accidents in a small town area of Missouri..the next best quote was $2100 per year for liability..and they said "this is the best quote for the entire state of Missouri" from one of the "call us and we could save you hundreds on your car insurance" companies my father called the last time it was raised $50/6 months..the bulk of the reason I bought the Max instead of a '96 Camaro Z28 was insurance difference..

I'd just go with liability in your case..maybe comprehensive..my/our '63 Buick Rivierra has a stated value for full coverage-type insurance for antique vehicles and it costs $350 per year, but we can only drive it 500 usage miles and 1500 miles to repair shops and shows per year without notifying both the state and our insurance company if we were to happen to enter a show a really long way away..somthing to think about if you get show car insurance..a lot of that is similar to antique vehicle insurance..

when I got my se at 18 my insurace was $2600
this year state farm dropped me down to $2000

but I switched to Gieco for $1400 now. the biggest drop comes at 25, so far I have a perfect record so Im sure that helps

nope..the deal is to have multiple discounts among other things. For instance, if you rent, get renters insurance from one company. get your auto from the same company. If you have more cars, the better. If you're in college, turn in your good grades. if you have airbags and abs, that might help as well! Install a reputable alarm system, might be even more. park your car inside the garage if you have one. and so on....driving school helps as well.....it's only like $10 - $15 bucks...thats more discounts there (granted thats 6hrs of gaming or modding time whichever way you see it) But every bit counts. most times, they wont tell you, so asking doesn't hurt. better to have asked and got denied than not to have asked at all. jumping from company to company when you see a lower rate doesn't always help either.

I forgot the name of the company, but I know it was less than $200 a year for full coverage, agreed upon value of $5500, so if it gets totaled or recked I can get $5500 for it.

Granted you have to have a collector car for it, but still.... no driving limits.

Why again am I thinking about selling the mustang???? hmmmmm maybe I just wont drive the maxima for 1.5 years.

I have full coverage on my Maxima. I pay $750 per year. This covers both myself and my wife.

What helps is that I'm over 25, married, have my house insured with the same company and have not had any accidents, tickets. Also, I live in the burbs.

Lophix brings up a good point - Multiple Discounts. To give you an idea.

This is what I save annually on the discounts per year on my car.

Multiple Line (Having house insured through them) = - $74.76
Multi-car (my Camry is insured through them too) = - $135.12
Air bag (it wasn't std equipment on '92) = - $30.24
Accident Free = -$105.84

That adds up to $345.96 in discounts.

I get a similar discount on my wife's car too.

Remember, insurance rates can vary by a variety of factors - Age, maritial status, whether you use the car for work/pleasure, miles driven, where you live, driving record, multiple line, number of driver's in household, etc....

What may work for one person through one company may not work for another person.

For me, the homeowner's insurance was actually one of the big factors.

After all, it would suck if a you switch your insurance company and saved $200 a year on car insurance, but they jacked up your homeowner's insurance by $250.....!

You youngsters just wait until your older. I have two rides (92 Max, 00 Infiniti) and I pay just under $1000 a year for full coverage on Infiniti and liability on the Max, along with free towing and stuff like that. But, I get a bunch of discounts for having my homeowner's insurance, multiple car, safe driver, blah, blah.

It does pay to shop around. I called every insurance company I could find and got the best rate from American Family. They have been really good to me, too.

$850 was the best I could find for liability. I pay more to garage the max than I do for insurance. Live in Manhattan / Garage ($150 p/month) / 28 yrs old

What? $150/month for a garage? That's insane. That's like having another car payment. I think you can lease a brand new Sentra for like $199/month!

I am glad I live where I do. I can park my car in my own garage at night for free and I can drive to work in under five minutes. When I get on the freeway I can actually use my cruise control and most of the time when cars are stolen here it's because someone left their keys in it and the door unlocked.

Yup, that’s why I have a 3rg Gen (no car note) and I will gladly pay the $150 rather that deal with the headaches of parking in my neighborhood. Before I got the spot there were nights that I had to drive over 45 min to find parking.
