broken timing belt

take your lesson from me, replace your timing belt especially before 200k miles. about a week and a half ago my timing belt snapped at about 2500 - 3000 rpm's. i felt like i had and eclipse when i found out the news from the grarage. when the timing belt went all the valves were wiped and found out that piston 1 and 3 now had holes in them. engines junk but i found another max engine w/ 40 k on it.(too bad i couldnt find a 300 zx engine that could be here in time) well since i was replacing the engine i decided to drop the car as well. so yea by the time im all done with it i'll be in it for about 3500-4000 $$ when it all said and done on monday. oh yea did i mention that i rebuilt the tranny in september which was about 1500$$ not including the centerforce dual friction clutch.

tell me what you guys think of the parts for my suspension

1.7" front 1.5" rear intrax springs
suspension tech front and rear sway bars
suspension tech front and rear camber correction kits
front and rear tokico struts

Sorry to hear about your engine...I used to have an Eclispe so I know exactly what you are talking about!

You'll have to post pics when you get your suspension set up..sounds like it will look good!

Good Luck! Joe

My timing belt also broke when I had Eclipse, I guess thats a problem area with those cars. Sorry to hear about your engine, I also know about blowing Maxima engines first hand.

Was your timing belt ever replaced in your Maxima or was it original at 200K? And you guys with the eclipses, how many miles were on your cars when they broke, and were they original T belts? Also on the Eclipses, did you pay extra to get the timing belt tensioner also replaced, as I've heard those break and then the Tbelt breaks on eclipses. Just wondering, b/c I've always wanted a 92 Talon TSi AWD...

I would stay away from that car. A good friend bought one new in 92 and under warranty, he had to have three new trannies put in it. He also had problems with the alternator and starter. After the warranty was up he traded it in on a Ford 4x4 because the Talon was such a piece of junk. I have to admit, it was fun to drive and I think they look pretty good. But, I am just giving you fair warning...

Oh, and Nothingstoofast, you would have been better off buying a nice VE, then parting out your current car and you probably would have been out about 1/3 less money. You would have 30 more hp, and you wouldn't have to worry about your timing belt breaking. oh, well. You should be set for a while. Good luck with the car.

IMO, there are no "nice" VE max's, since all of them are SEs..the only thing I like about SEs is that some came with 5 speeds...I suppose you could make an SE nice..rip the spoiler off, put black guage faces in it, replace all of the window trim with chrome instead of black, use body-color mirrors instead of black, chrome GXE grille, and replace the front doors with GXE doors with the keypad and the rest of the factory keyless entry...basicly, remove all of the SE trim package and replace it with a GXE trim package..but again, thats just my opinion..of course, my dislike of the SE trim wouldn't apply much in his case, since he already has an SE..

I don't like spoilers on imports, and only on a few domestics.. (camaros, firebirds, and mustangs are about it), I loath white guage faces..windows should be chrome trimmed on 95% of cars...mirrors, well, they look good in black on SOME body styles..the only time I would really like the SE body trim would be on a VERY dark blue body..use the black as mild accenting..black grille, mirrors, window trim, and if it must be there, the spoiler, on a dark blue body would look good on a 3rd gen..I suppose it doesn't look terrible on the charcoal maximas..and of course, almost anything can be made to look good on black..get some black chrome rims and throw the SE body trim (minus spoiler) on a black 3rd gen with full 5% tint all around (only down to the AS1 line on the windshield, and only 15% there) and that would be a spiffy car..

Then again, I painted my toyota tacoma I had for a little while gunmetal and dark pearlescent green..so..I might have odd tastes..

Other than the door locks, all of that stuff you don't like is just cosmetic and pretty easy to swap out. Chrome grill, spoiler, painted mirrors, white faced gauges. Those are easy swaps and GXE parts are probably more available than SE parts.

When you get a GXE, you lose 30 hp and VLSD. And you can't easily swap those into a GXE. You also lose rear disc brakes, even though those aren't as difficult to swap. But still...

I'm not really ******* your taste, just the fact that you'd rather have the lesser car, as far as performance.

Dude, I am really sorry to hear of what has happened to your car. However, if you ever decided to part out and the ST Sway Bars happened to be in good shapes, such as if it wasn't bent out of shape. Please, PM me with your return email address (the one that you checked often) and I'll buy it off from you if you could get me a good deal on it.

On an eclipse/talon/laser you need to the balance shaft belt and the tensioner replaced along with the timing belt every 60k. I've heard about alot of people getting just the t-belt done, and then the balance belt goes and takes out the t-belt---instant new head and possible new pistons. Of course alot of people get the balance shaft belt eliminator kit, which causes the engine to be a slight bit shakier, but gives a little boost in power not having to turn those big balance shafts...
