Muffler Tip question

My friend is going to give me his muffler that he used for two months, but the tips are 3.5, which is WAY TOO big. If I took it to a muffler shop and had them chop off those tips and put some 2'' tips on it would it make the muffler more quiet, and essentially more normal? Or do tips not play as big a role in terms of sound?

Doing that might take the silencer off soo as a result it MIGHT be louder. I am not too sure of this so wait to see what others think.

I don't think it has a silencer, I can see straight through.

the tips do make the tone of the muffler so more than likely, since it's straight through, it might sound stock. Remember to keep the tips that were cut so they can be rewelded if you don't like the sound.
