yet another new mod for the max

Bought Sola's (lophix) flywheel and tranny over the weekend to compliment the new clutch and gain some more power.

are the torque specs the same for the flywheel bolts being aluminum? hopefully i'll get this thing installed if i can get the upgraded input shaft bearing from ipt.

Thanks again Sola!

Looks good! I just installed mine this weekend and torqued the bolts to ~20 ft-lbs.

IPT = http://www.importperformancetrans.com/index.shtml

part of an e-mail i got from them:

"As well as some other performance upgrades, we have a means of installing a heavier duty bearing into the Nissan 5 speeds, which normally is a permanent fix."

I sent another e-mail to them to see if they would sell the bearing itself. Hopefully they will because this tranny crap is getting ridiculous and i don't have the money to have them build it up yet.

i'll definitely let everyone know if they sell these outright. since they said its usually a permanent fix i bet there'd be a lot of maxima owners that buy one.

also, i think the fsm says 83-93 ft lb... but that just doesn't sound right to me.

torque spec on the flywheel-->crank bolts is like 65ft-lb.
torque spec on the pressure plate-->flywheel bolts is around 22 ft-lb.. check your service manual for specifics.

(The flywheel-->crank specs are in the engine mechanical section. EM-35 in my 93 FSM. it's in the exploded diagram of the entire block.)

mtcookson, PLEASE let me know what you find out on the input shaft bearings. I replaced the entire tranny at 165k miles, and the bearings are shot again 35k later. this is ridiculous.

Matt, why am I not suprised?

It's so cool having someone closeby who can drop a tranny in less than an hour! Props, Mark...never seen anyone take that thing down like nothing.

Bearings will most likely be go...for once, someone actually KNOWS there's a problem with our trannys. I can't imagine what their (ipt) beefed up rebuilds would be like.

Yeah, I was talking about the PP to flywheel bolts since they thread into the aluminum. Just curious, are the bearings in our trannies prone to failure? What are some of the symptoms?

the input shaft bearings are made of aluminum foil or something because they are always breaking. if you hear nasty noises when the clutch pedal is out and the engine is just idling most of the time the bearing is toast.

Thanks! Starts getting really easy when the input shaft bearing breaks every few months

that'll make it easier to take the engine out :-)

much easier. if you lift the car a tiny bit more you can actually just lower the engine down. by doing that you don't have to unbolt the motors mounts. just hook up the hoist to the engine and lift it up a bit. then, just unbolt the cross member and slowly lower the engine. (this of course is after unhooking all the vacuum hoses and wires and such but you get the idea)

alrighty guys, i just got off the phone with IPT (broke down and just used my cell phone. hopefully won't cost too much since i'm in roam here).

apparently what they do is they actually mill out some material where the stock bearing goes and put in a bigger one that is stronger so its not a direct replacement bearing.

i'll get a price quote and see what kind of price we'd be looking at but more than likely it will be quite a bit.
