Removing shift-****

How do I do this in an automatic? I'm in the process of customizing my shifter lights, covers and need this off...how?

Use your eyes and your fingers.
You'll probably find a c-clip holding it on.

There is no reason you need to take it off to replace bulbs and stuff. I sounds like you might be getting owned by geometry. If you're trying to remove the shifter trim piece and cant get it off without removing the shifter, try turning it 90 degrees. If you really do need to remove the shifter, I'm pretty sure there are a couple screws along it. It really shouldn't be hard to get out.
