To remove the upper portion of the intake manifold on an 89 do you have to drain the engine coolant. Chilton says yes for 85-88 but does not mention it for the 89. Haynes makes no distinction and says you should.

there's SOME coolant in the manifold. I wouldn't worry about draining all of it, but you might want to drain a bit to keep it from oozing everywhere when you pop the manifold loose.
