New Steering Wheel (pic)

I wanted a new steering wheel and picked up this one pretty cheap. MrGone has a steering wheel puller, so he swapped in my new one while I was up there doing the clutch/flywheel this weekend.

It is out of a 91 240sx (s13) and it fits very well. All of the cruise buttons work, as well as the horn. Basically, it's a simple mod if you have a steering wheel puller.

Next on my list is definitely the shift ****, since mine sucks. I am holding out for an AE one, but I will see what comes along.

Umm, do you mean the part that connects to the steering column? Or do you mean what it looks like looking in from the front windshield?

The part that mounts on the steering column looks like the back of your steering wheel, with three brass (copper maybe?) rings on the back side for the cruise and horn functions. This is a direct swap. I didn't have to move, change or modify anything. It is just as if this was a Maxima steering wheel.

Someone else on .org has put in the same wheel. I can't remember who it is, but I think just about any Nissan steering wheel will fit. I just wanted to retain my cruise control.

Chris- The rings are copper, brass doesn't conduct electricity

It's a very easy install with the right tools. The only thing that holds the steering wheel down is one 19mm nut with a washer attached to it. The steering wheel is attached to a splined shaft.

For anyone interested, I just have a Grant steering wheel puller I bought at a parts store. I bought it for when I put my Grant 719 wheel on my Mustang. I'm just glad I was able to use it more than once It's just their universal puller set and it works perfectly with Nissan's.

The splines are tapered, or they should be. When you tighten down the 19mm nut it should push the wheel on. On Chris's car, my car and my Mustang the wheel wouldn't come off the car with out the puller, granted I tried alot harder with the mustang than the maxima's to try and get it off because I was trying to get away with taking it off with out buying the puller but it wasnt going to happen.

Based on how mine and Chris's came off I am surprised to hear you can take yours off with out using the puller.

Looks very nice ... but if you don't mind me asking - what's wrong with the original one? Wouldn't it be easier to install one of those wheelskins?
Or even get the whole set (including handbreak and shift **** covers)?
They even make combination colors (say, black and red, black and yellow, or whatever).

dkris42- I am fairly certian you could, but not 100% sure. I wanted to get a earily 5th gen wheel, but airbags make them cost alot

1) The original steering wheel leather was worn all the way through to the plastic.
2) I only paid $20 for the 240 wheel (wheelskins are more than that).
3) The wheelskins are not designed specifically for our car, just to go around the wheel, thus not covering all of the original leather.
4) I doubt if it could be any easier. MrGone installed the new steering wheel in about two minutes (since he had a puller).
5) I wanted something sportier and this wheel is slightly smaller and thicker than the stock wheel, while retaining a stock look.

Also, Craig, I didn't have an airbag so I just found a wheel that had the similar cruise buttons and no airbag. I think a similar year Stanza and 300zx non-airbag wheel will fit, too, but don't quote me on that. Both might even be the same -- they look the same, I am just not sure about the size of them. And, if you don't care about using your cruise or want to figure out a way to rewire it, there are lots of different Skyline and Silvia wheels out there that the s13 and s14 guys are buying. They look cool, but the cost is usually pretty high.

yeah, when I got my car the steering alignment was off, and I align the wheel off to be center when driving straight. the wheel was never remove before, Now I have a grant on it, leather wrap, polish dish and stainless steel screws. all done without the puller, but that does scares me since the holes for the puller in on the wheel.
good day,
rymo

Don't need a universal puller. Just unscrew the 19mm locknut until it's nearly off and wriggle steering wheel on several different axis points (the spokes being one of them). You may need to use some BS & I (Brute Strength & Ignorance) but the wheel will pop off. Remember not to take the nut off completely to avoid the wheel smashing into your face
Have taken 100's of wheels off this way no problemo. I did similar conversion coupla weeks ago but with a steering wheel from JDM Stanza - the cruise control buttons are on the right hand spoke next to the rim - even closer to the big thumb

5 bucks for the puller, makes a nifty addition to the tool corral and saves some sweat for us lazy-a$$es. plus the spare wheel i have is still on the column, but off the car, so pulling really hard will only ensure my head being hit by a steering column!

nice work! but what are us airbaggers (on the wheel, not on the suspension, shaved ) supposed to do in the case of a swap? Anyone tried to swap in a later gen wheel with bag?

Thanks.

Disconnect the battery and let the car sit for a 1/2 - 1 hour then start to work on the airbag.
That time should be long enough for the capacitor to discharge and have all power gone from the airbag system.
NO GUARANTEES though

my wheel looked like crap so i just cut the stitching and took the leather cover off and there was a like new regular wheel under neath. i did it on my 89se and my 90 se i guess the leather covers are and addon. they are able to be taken off. this may help some poeple who have crappy leather covers but cant afford a new wheel and are unsure if they can take that cover off and have a decent looking wheel underneath....

yeah, SE's (and probably some GXE's) have Leather wrapped steering wheels from the factory. I like the leather, but my wheel isnt in good shape I think I'm just going to leave the leather on it for now.

I don't know if they made the 240 with brown leather. Not only that, I think they changed the style of wheel for the airbag.

Hey, MrGone, did you get it installed already?

Um... can't you just pop off the plastic tab on the side of the steering wheel and unplug the airbag? That's what the Hayne's manual says to do.

Why would you remove a critical safety component of your car just to have a different steering wheel?

And what do you mean thicker wheel? I thought the stock Maxima wheels is one of the thickest wheels I have felt. My dads Rolls Royce steering wheel is like fishing line thickness compared to the Maxima.

jaguax- In my experience, the air bag isnt going to do much for you in our cars, lol.

Do you really want to risk having the airbag blow up in your face?

I'm with you on the install... LOL ...wouldn't that be funny... "no one said anything about the battery..."

I meant, if anyone knew of any direct wheel swaps(with airbag)... I'm thinking some infinity wheels must be legit? hmm... must research this one....
