I can't find the info on how to ground your VTCs, does anyone have a link or a thread name?

I'd love to replace them (and half of the car), but I'm a poor college student working for AAA on the weekends to pay my rent...can't afford to throw money at stuff on the car unless it prevents foreward motion

if you have an 89, then no. VTC solenoids are the heart of the variable timing system on the VE30DE engine, available only on 92-94 Maxima SE models. If your 89 maxima ticks, it probably has some other top-end noise

actually the solenoids just let oil go to the VTC assemblies which are the heart of the system. For the longest time i thought the solenoids were the main things that actually made cams advance but nope.

the exhaust studs hold the exhaust manifolds on. They break which cause exhaust leaks...exhaust leaks sound kinda like ticking.

EDIT: LOL I just noticed I put that the exhaust studs hold the intake manifold on...man I must be going crazy...I fixed it.

You are lucky from my stand point. I'd rather have an exhaust stud problem than a VTC or solonoid problem as with mine.

Amen, VE30 problems are nasty. Have you replaced your knock sensor yet? I still have nightmares about that job

Definitely get the instructions posted on 4DSC.com under the 'how to' section by Ken Rosengren. I had a few parts left over, and some regrets - I didn't change any of the vacuum or fuel lines while I was in there, and I regret it now - re-sealing 10 year-old injection hose has resulted in some fuel leaks that mysteriously appear only in cold weather - or perhaps it's bad injector O-rings. It was worth it though, a new car when it was done.
