Buying Car Back From the Insurance Company

Hi, I just had a question for anyone who has been in a car accident and had their car considered totaled afterwards. I was just curious to see how much the insurance company is willing to offer in order to sell the car back to the owner. I was just curious to see if it would be worth more to part out the car than it would be to just let them take it. If anyone has any information that would help, I’d appreciate it. Thanks

Yeah, sorry about the accident. I had to deal with my insurance company back in October. I had a 92 GXE with 117K miles, black leather, ABS, auto climate control, overall great condition. I got about $3600 after my $500 deductible. I didn't think it would have been worth my time to part out, etc. Good luck with yours.

They usually sell it back to you anywhere from $100 to the value your deductible. Just call them and ask them. Popular requests from wrecked maxes are:

- working engine
- strong tranny
- leather seats
- sunroof
- rear suspension / brakes (for disc conversion)
- interior trim

Think about what you can salvage, vs what it'll cost to buy the vehicle and keep it in your front yard like a redneck for awhile.

I don't think it'd be worth to buy the car back from the insurance company because the engine has 180 k on it, but I hate to see the car go. I also don't know too much about the parts and value of them, so I wouldn't be able to tell if it was worth anything. It's a 1991 GXE gold/leather interior, power everything. I loved my car, but some idiot in an SUV slammed into it and totaled it. I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and let her go to the insurance company and put the money towards a new maxima. Thanks for all of your help in my decision. Hope to have a new maxima by the time the rental period on the altima runs out.

Mine wanted $500 for the last max I wrecked. It was 100% stock, but in great condition.

The insurance company came out about three days ago to take pictures of the rear end of the car, but I still haven't heard any talk of a price I'm going to get for it. As soon as I hear back from them, I'll let you all know. I figure I should hear back very soon because they're paying for the rental and they expect me to buy a new car 24 hours after I receive the check from them.

I had a total loss accident 5 months ago
was told by the insurance company that they would give me $2025 and they would take the car away or $2000 and i could keep the car
I went for the $2000 and kept the car
spent $200 for junkyark parts.
fixed it myself. about 5 hours work

I was told by my insurance companny that the car is not covered if I cause an accident because they already paid me for a total loss.
But if someone hits me then It is covered.

I will have to do some body work this spring and paint a few areas or just paint the whole car,,, but I figured at 120,000 miles and in decent shape why get rid of the car,,, but I did drive away from the accident.

Well the insurance company faxed me some papers providing me with some "information" on how my car was appraised for the amount I'll receive. Lets just say it was a little interesting considering the cars they found ranged from 800-2700 dollars. The insurance company wants to cut me a check for 1,600 dollars. I called the insurance company and complained about the pack of "information" they sent me. After not being called back, I called my insurance company. They told me the key word to tell the other company was "lawyer." I did as they said and sure enough, the other company is sending me a larger check for my consideration. On top of that, they also extended the rental period. I still haven't heard how much more, but I still have my fingers crossed. I'd be happy for at least 2 grand. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks for your support and responses.

Last month my 90 GXE was stolen. The thiefs did some damage, the insurance company paid the dealer $900 to fix it. When it was determined more was involved they decided to total it. They cut me a check for $2,725.

They went out to bid at the junk yards, I only had to meet that proce. Came back at $257.00. I need to do stereo work and some trim.

BTW, Just went over 188K, working towards the big 200K. Car runs fine. It has it's blemishes. Still gets good gas mileage, it's my daily driver. I work 100 miles round trip, my 2003 F150 Supercrew 4X4 sucks the gas down. The max is getting 24-26mpg. With gas prices for 87 Octane averaging $2.09 her in Nevada, I still need it...

Make sure you get what you deserve. Print out the KBB value. It has to be at what I got.
