sticks in reverse
sticks in reverse
when I shift my 92 SE 5 speed into reverse, then push in the clutch to shift out, it sometimes sticks in gear. If I let the clutch grab just a bit, moving the car back slightly, I'm able to pull it out of reverse. If the car is stopped however, it won't come out of reverse. It's not really a huge problem, very easy to correct by creeping back a bit, but it certainly scared me last Friday after I bought the car, got it home, and tried turning it around in my driveway. Is this a common problem? Is it something in the shift linkage, or the gears itself? I'm mainly wondering, because I've got powertrain warranty on the car for the next 6 months, and if it's something servicable and/or common, I'd like to deal with it.
Also, another question now that I'm thinking about it, I hear the occasional tick from the engine, which I expect is the VTC. I plan on switching to synthetic oil fairly soon, as well as getting a filter with an ani flowback valve. With a change to synthetic, has anyone noticed an improvement with the sound? Mine seems very minor, so I'm not too concerned, but I'm going to keep close tabs on it, as I understand it's a rather labour intensive job to have done, and like the transmission, would try to have it fixed under the warranty. I noticed the fiter listed in another post was a Toyota filter, does that mean the Nissan filter doesn't have a flowback valve? As a rule, I generally like the idea of using the manufacturers brand of filter on an engine, because that's the filter that was used by the manufacturer during the testing phase, and is what all the engine lubrication standards are based on. But, if the Nissan filter doesn't have this valve, that would pose a reason for me to use something different.

I had the same problem you are having...but mine was a recently rebuilt tranny....cause: somthing broke inside the tranny, havent torn it apart mainly because i found a used one with 60k for 100 bucks, but i have heard other people having the problem you have and it just being the linkage. As far as the Oil filter. Nissan quit making the original Oil filter that goes with our cars and replaced it with a p.o.s. filter. I switched to the toyota filter and ill be honest, there wasnt much improvement but still to enuff to say it was worth it. This is the filter you need Toyota 90915-YZZA2 OEM

Thanks for the info, that info on the oil filter will be usefull. That's annoying that Nissan discontinued the proper filter for the engine, but our cars are getting older now, so cost saving always enters the picture at some level. As for the tranny, I'm hoping it's not too serious, and that it's just something like the linkage. But I've got a warranty, so I'll use that once I find out what it is.
i had the same problem, it will have to be rebuilt the metal sleeves in the tranny wear over time and have to be replaced, the "rods" get caught on them and get snagged, get it fixed soon cause eventually it will be stuck in reverse and you will not be able to get it out !!
