Caliper or parking brake cable seized???
Caliper or parking brake cable seized???
Hi. My driver's side rear caliper has seized for the second time in 2 weeks. Both times, it was after washing mud off the car (I live in a new subdivision) and then parking it in the garage for 3 or 4 days. Both times, I noticed the parking brake handle was really easy to pull up, with almost no resistance for the first 4 or 5 clicks. I'm just about to go in the garage and have a look, but the first time, after removing the wheel and caliper, the piston turned back in very easily, so I'm thinking it's not the caliper seizing, but the parking brake cable.... What are your thoughts??
Thanks.
Thanks.
OK, update time. Removed the caliper, disconnected the cable, and the cable slides back and forth with no problem. The actual lever thing on the caliper that applies the piston was sticky, so I lubed it, and moved it back and forth a million times. It's much better now, but the lever thing can still be moved a little bit before the brake is 100% off. Is it possible that the return spring has weakened after 12 years? This is the big silver coloured external spring that forces the parking brake mechanism off when the handle is released in the car. The only other thing I'm going to do, is back off the parking brake adjuster and readjust it to the factory specified 11 clicks. Cheers.
I suppose I could live without the parking brake, but how would I do rear wheel drifts when it snows? (Actually, maybe that's why I'm having the problem in the first place...)
