3rd gen seat in...

My Room? I had my seats out a while back and remember sitting in my driver seat when it was in my room and it was sweet, does anyone use a seat in there room...say I was to find some leather seats, and I put my cloth ones in my room, could I hook them up to power seeing as how they're power seats...I know I'd have to take off/cut off/modify the brackets, any other ideas?

you could with a 12v adapter to wire it to. i dont see the point but to each his own it is a different thing to do. go to radio shack get the 12v adapter and wire it up and post some pics may be a good idea for a game seat in front of the t.v

buy a computer power supply, if you want I could sell you one for like $20 shipped. Then you just wire it up to the power supply (yellow and black) and walla! 12v DC

I've used mine to test everything from clocks to gauge clusters to stereos (although a 300w power supply will power a JL300/4 just as long as you dont try to put a CD in the radio (as soon as I did the power supply would trip and I'd have to reset it hehehehe).

I wanted to get my old black leather from my old 93 maxima, it was going to make some awesome furniture hehehe. I was going to build a wood frame/base and everything then carpet that. I would make it so the seat bolts directly to the frame/base thing you would make

Computer supplies are 12V and 5V. You can also get 7V out of that somehow, I'm not actually totally sure how though, I just know it's possible. The 12V wires are yellow and the 5V wires are red. The fan will go on with the power. Some power supplies have their own switch on the back, make sure that's on, and of course, that the power is set to 115. If there's any doubt as to the power, get a volt meter, set it to DC, and test the voltage between the yellow 12v + and the black ground. Actually, the nice thing about the 5V is given a big enough power supply, in theory, you could use that as the remote turn on for an amp...but you'd need a big power supply, I'm just thinking in theory.

That's a really cool idea, making a chair out of a car seat. I totally want to make one someday. The power recline would be sweet! I was watching Car and Driver TV the other day, and during a segment with Csaba Csere sitting in his office, I noticed his chair was a car seat. Looked to me like it was from an RX7, because it had the speaker outlines in the headrest. Just had a thought...that'd make a pretty sweet setup for a surround system on a computer...have speakers in the headrest hooked to the rear channel, then mount the sub under the chair, and have the fronts on your desk. Oh yah, everytime the bass hit you'd get a massage... That was random...

If anyone makes a chair from a car, and has pics, post them, I'd really like to see what people have come up with.

If the fan is dead, and the power supply isn't, it will be once it overheats. If there's not a huge draw on it, it shouldn't overheat too much though, and you can always swap out the fan with one that works. If you don't have a voltmeter, get another fan, say a case fan from your computer, and hook it to the power supply, and see if it spins.

Doesn't it need to be hooked up to a motherboard to work? or atleast thats how it switches on and off using the button in the front of the cases (through the motherboard)....

I think I am going to do this with my tan seats from my parts car...

It was easier for me to just search than try to explain it lol

http://xtronics.com/reference/atx_pinout.htm

You want to bridge #14 to the 5v IIRC, if that doesnt work just try using the ground or the 12v, I cant remember. (this is assuming its an ATX power supply, if its an AT, normally it has a switch on the power supply itself.... not the 110v cut switch, but the one that actually turns the power supply on.)

It doesn't have to be hooked up to a mobo to make it work, just kind of tinker with it. Normally the fan on the power supply itself will be the easiest way to see if the power supply is on or not. Otherwise just like Creedence85 said, hook up another fan to the power supply, when it spins the power supply is on (watch your fingers though (if it doesnt hurt, its a whimpy fan ) or you could hook up a LED (normally what I do just because it's easier and colorful weeeeeeee .

Or just buy a 12V AC/DC transformer for $5, and wire it to your project...

Umm guys, you're forgetting the current requirements.

the power seats take about 3-5A of current when they're moving. and upwards of 20 for a very short time when they start moving. I wouldn't try to hook it up to a power supply of less than 15A, as DC motors draw TONS of current when you first try to move them. easily enough to screw up a power supply or cheap transformer..

good luck finding a DC power supply of that kind of current for less than about $60 used.

I think I may try this sometime soon. I'll have a few seats laying around once my dad swaps out his old ones and puts the new ones in.
