I got underneath my 1991 SE to drain the ATF , but could not find the drain plug.

Is the drain plug a hex bolt or something else? I unbolted what appeared to be the plug, but no fluid came out......so I felt stupid.

Please help. Also, how many quarts will it need to bring it back up to level.

Its a plug that sits right under the bell housing. If you take a 1/2 rachet it fits right in the plug. I'm not sure how many quarts it takes. I believe its around 4.

Thanks so much for the info man.

Apparently around 25 men/women looked at the post, and you were the only one who actually helped out.

I know that out of those 25 kind souls, 75% had to know the answer to the question.

Its true though, this forum is not what it used to be.

Thanks again Chris.

Tranny Fluid Change

Hey Man

Whatever you do, don't replace the drained fluid with the rated capacity of the transmission. (15.75 pints for an ATF)

You have to keep in mind that the torque converter retains a LOT of atf fluid. You will only be able to drain about 4 quarts.

When you replace it, use a long neck funnel and add it back in throught your dipstick. It should be around four quarts, but add a little bit at a time to make sure you have the proper level!

Thanks Pervis. I'll make sure to fill up bit at a time.

On my dad's Lincoln Town Car, there's also a drain plug on the converter, which allows total fluid change.

Is there any way to drain from the torque converter on the 3rd Gens?

To do a complete refill/change yourself: remove the return line from the radiator to the transmission (put open line into catch pan), run the car for about 15-30 sec. (1-2 qt of fluid), refill trans, repeat dump until you've gone through about 8 qts of fluid, of the stuff coming out is clear, bright red.

Re: where is that ****** drain plug...

The drain plug is has an "etched" square. You need to use a 1/2 inch ratchet. Facing the front of the car, it is located just left of the driver's side wheel.

See the square plug sticking out from the bottom of the car on the right (in this pic) side?

That's the one you need.
