how long should the oem struts last?

i have owned my 92 SE since the beginning and as far as my dad and I can remember, the struts have never been replaced. They have 182000 miles on them, so I was wondering what the signs are that you need to replace them? Has anyone elses lasted that long?

Depends on who you ask, most companies recommend replacement every 60k

I've 128k on mine, and I can't complain
Of course my old blazer has 160k (I think) and still OE on the shocks.

my black max had 101k on it and needed new struts.
white max came with some sears struts or something, one was blown, another wasnt as blown, then the other 2 were decent (like front driver + rear passenger were fine). @126k

when i make a really tight turn, it sounds like they groan, otherwise they seem fairly okay. the handling is kinda mushy too. I'm really jus lookin for a good reason to tell my dad I want lowering springs, struts, and rims besides saying I just want them. Maybe this will ease him up

...closing in on 200K, and the struts are OEM...

...I KNOW they're bad, that's why the KYB GR-2's and Intrax or Eibachs are on the shopping list

It seems that some of you need a new struts and why not some of you guys put into group deal for the struts? That'll be nice.

My maxima had around 127000 and my struts were gone, all four of them. It sucked when i had to go over speed bumbs, man. But i got lucky and ran across a deal on ebay for st struts and sprint springs total 333 shippings and insurance. Im not sure if this guy is still selling them but you can try. I believe the company is suspensionmax. Fast shipping too, but they are a sob to install but i suggest installing them yourself it'll save you some cash. I did this about a month ago and now my maxima has fully dropped ruffly two inches i love it. Now my ride is so much better, well i got to kinda dodge pot holes and ruff roads, i think that's due to the sprint springs, cuz they are not linear or something. But overall for 333 bucks i got a good deal. Beggers can't be choosers.......

My Max has 130k and the struts are orrigional as far as I know. I'll replace them in August (I'm working at a summer camp for June and July). Right now the car needs a new timing belt and is making tapping-lifter sounds. First things first I guess, esp when you have no moneys.

It still handles better than my dad's 01 Elanatra and feels much more stable at high speed, so it can wait. It does groan a bit on sharp turns though and feels a bit too bouncy.

Signs of shot struts (or shocks on your family truckster) include: second bounce after going through a sharp dip or a long rolling bump, also dancing of the car over washboard bumps a series of shortly spaced bumps. It can be fun to drive along side of a car and watch the tires bounce out of control. Obviously keep a safe distance.... 3rd gen cars by now (year 2004) are probably shot, unless you like on a marble table without winters...

I'm kinda new to the group deal thing, but how do you get one started? I was thinking maybe a Tokico/Intrax combo...but I dunno how to start a gd. Should I go into the section and ask someone to do it?

if you really want to see badly blown and dangerous struts look at an 89-91 Continental
those air bags are crap.
Hit a bump while pulling a turn and the car jumps sideways.
My subi did that **** to me, Freakin' all wheel Airbag suspension.

Just got a set of used ST springs that were only used on a 3rd Gen Max for about 3 months for $70 bucks off eBay, and the guy's being cool enough to let me come by and scoop them from him since he lives about an hour from me. Also got a confirmation on a brand new set of KYB GR-2s off an eBay seller for $157+tax (CA only) & he'll let me come by and scoop them up too. My brother found a guy that'll did some work on his car and he told me he'd install all of it for me for $80

KYB GR2/ST springs all totaled for just about $300, including installation. Sounds like that's a done dealeeyo...

I think the group deal is a great idea - as long as we can have it in like 2 months (time for summer to start and some of us to accumulate money).
I got my car at 142k mi, handles like crap. I thought maxima's might very well be the worst handling boat ever (turning corners at 25mi the drivers side is about a foot lower than passenger side), and going over bumps is like riding in the ocean... "boingy, boingy, boingy...".
Might be my shocks tho... :P I know my front are bad according to the mechanic, but the rear seem fairly good. I was going to save some money and just by front, becuase hey, thats where pasengers sit in my car, and I don't think I'll notice the rear as much. And the max looks so much more agressive with the ~~|\ look rather than -... My sub makes the front and back sit even. I don't want to go to low though, I don't normally turn corners faster than 30mph anyway.. :P maybe an inch drop, so I wont bottom out to bad when I try to go 80 over dips... but so that I don't catch air on the 2nd bounce

I need one of those flying cars... like when julia stiles goes over the train tracks in "a guy thing"....
"sigh"

My struts have 192,xxx mi on them and they are not all that bad. I mean, yeah, they need replacing but they handle well enough for me to delay the install to the summer. Then Tokico's and Eibachs are coming, hopefully with '99 SE five spoke wheels. It can be kind of fun though, especially when you live in the mountains like me, you can the Maxima to drift completely sideways in most of the corners and boost out with the front wheels. Did that with both the VG and the VE!

as to the actual thread title, they should last 250,000k but that will never happen. 60-80k is more reasonable. You also dont really notice how worn they are until you replace them.

yea, probably. It's the same kind of thing like you don't realize what you have until you don't have it.
