Ignition Upgrade

What components can we purchase to upgrade our 3rd Gen ignition systems, and is there a brand that's the most preferred to purchase? I know the VEs don't have wires, they have coils right? What about the VGs?

Also, what are the advantages of upgrading the ignition system? I've heard a lot about MSD components, but are there other brands out there that are comparable?

Will it necessarily improve gas mileage and performance?

I'm full of NOOB questions today, aren't I

Has anyone ever heard of the name brand Force Ignition Systems?

I'm asking all these questions because I'm curious as to what else I can do to improve performance/efficiency outside of the obvious bolt-ons that we always discuss in here, outside of a turbo/engine swap/etc. I know I'm going to need to get a MAJOR tune-up in the near future, and figure I'd better prepare for it beforehand. I'll probably hit the 200K mile mark by the end of this month, so outside of new plugs/wires/advanced timing, what else is there to do?

Thanks in advance!

ignition upgrades are also unecessary...although some do indeed provide improved MPG(which is a plus during these times of high gas prices) I don't think the gains will be that noticable if at all. as far as performance, maybe if it was combined with another form of fuel control(ie JWT or AFC) it will be beneficial...but again, on most bolt-on, n/a cars its a waste, stock ignition is more than adequate.

@DA-MAX...

OK, improved MPG sounds like it'd be worth it, regardless to how much gas prices are. So, what's usually involved? Replacing the coil, spark plug wires & spark plugs, and adding an ignition-control module - correct??? It doesn't appear to be very expensive to do, and if it would improve gas mileage, I'd be willing to investigate the possibilities.

Thanks for responding, bro!

well look into the MSD 6AL and for a little more pep add the Blaster 2 coil which can be used in place of the stock coil...a rather cheap combo and might yeild a drop or two of performance, but nothing really impressive over stock or necessary. shouldn't run more than $150-160 for the 6Al and Blaster coil. after that a standard tuneup(new plugs and wires) will do the trick
