89 GXE Tranny problem - Drive and Reverse don't work

Putting the car in D stalls the engine, and when you put it in R it seems like it's about to move but then just revs as if it was in Neutral. 2nd and 1st work.

Just wondering what I should look at, or what I should know before getting it fixed, or possibly buying a new tranny.

I had a similar problem few weeks ago and it was diagnosed as internal transmission failure. You can have it checked out at the dealership ($80), but it most likely needs replacement.

yeah it seems to be an internal transmission failure... but I can't find any transmissions priced low enough so that the car will be worth salvaging. If this was a VE 5spd then I'd go for the rebuild... but I'd rather try to fix it.

I have the resources to take the tranny out and apart. I also have a few tranny parts from a previous project that I'm hoping might serve as replacements if those same parts are jacked up in the current tranny. I'd just rather find out as much info before taking time out of my incredibly busy schedule to mess with it. Not to mention I have to replace the EGR valve and the suspension on my 97 gxe.



Did the dealer tell you exactly what internal part was jacked up?

If you put it in 2nd then try to put it in drive does that work?
You may have a bad shifter bushing or 2.

If it is internally bad (probably clutches)
Let me know, I can easily get the internal parts at a reasonable price.

going to D from 1 or 2 does the same thing.. the car stalls on D and R still acts like N.

I have a lot of the internal parts available, but if it's one that I don't have then I'll shoot you a PM. I just wan to isolate the problem first.

What parts do you think it can be?

Probably fried clutches, but you can't really know until you open the trans

This is my first time to post and I cannot find information related to my problem. I have a 93 SE and must often wiggle the shifter forward in order for it to start. Also, lately I have been having to "help" the trans. to go into drive by giving it a gentle nudge. I suspect I need a minor adjustment in the shift cable, but in looking at it I cannot see any way to adjust. Any ideas will be very welcome.

That's what ****ed me off most. They isolated everything else, so the only the left was internal failure. But they couldn't exactly tell what. The guy said the only bad thing a computer can locate inside a tranny were solenoids. I don't know if I'll ever go to a dealership again - $80 wasted. I was advised to do so by an ex-nissan mechanic friend of mine who suggested that "they saw thousands of the 3rg gens" and would probably find the problem easily. However, the stealership meant the only way to pinpoint the problem is to take out the tranny and look inside it, which would run another $600-700.

Try to get a parts car like I did. I was lucky to find one locally for $500, take off a lot of parts off of it besides tranny, and still sell it afterwards for $200.

that's what i might do then.. or just sell this one for parts, then sell my 97 and get a couple of corollas or sentras for my wife an I. I'll probably get a motorcycle for my work commute. When money is good then I'll pick up a couple better 3rd and 4th gens for modding

bud1952-you may need the two shifter bushings replaced. signs of bad bushings may be needing to push forward on the shifter, or with the vehicle acting like it's in N when drive is selected, and requiring moving of the shifter to R or 1, etc. to get it in gear. the parts are cheap. my 94 gxe required occasionally to put in 1 or R and then back to drive to get drive.

In case you opt for the second alternative, corollas are much more reliable than sentras.
