1993 Maxima without A/C
I have some questions for you and need some advice. The a/c in my car has stopped working due to lack of 134A and I need to refill it. What I want to know is do I need to add more oil to the system before I refill it or should I just go ahead and add the freon. Also, when adding the freon, should I refill it with the cans upright as a gas or should I refill it with the cans upside down as a liquid. This is the first time it has needed to be recharged so I don't know how I should go about recharging it. The A/C just recently stopped all together after showing signs of running low on freon . It would cool ok at low speeds but once you get on the highway it would cut off. Now it is off all together.
Please help. Thanks

Sounds like you have a leak, so you might want to look into putting some stop leak in first. I believe all of the freon types are a mixture of a little bit of oil and the rest freon. So, simply by putting in a can of freon, you'll be adding a bit of oil to the system. The compressor should have a low-pressure cut off switch in it which keeps it from coming on when there's not enough pressure to safely operate it. Usually, the procedure is to run the engine with the AC turned on while you're adding the freon, and the compressor will kick in when the pressure gets high enough. Can't tell you how much to add, tho.
