I was gonna do this with my Pioneer deck, I think the trick is to use the sleeve that goes around the cd player and use the next closest hole to the one that looks "right"

Some people put the whole head unit with trim inside the dash. I myself took off the trim beause it would fit. Well I'll dremel it to make it fit.

Here is what it looks like on mine:

The car had an Alpine HU when I bought it and it was installed this way. I like it because the actual face of the stereo is flush with the trim. If you put the HU in the other way, it sticks out.

Just my $.02, you are all welcome to install it any way you want.

Umm, I didn't install it. The original stereo was in there like that when I bought the car (Alpine 7840) and I bought my Alpine 9807 and had the shop here do the install. I told them to put it in the same way.

Yeah, I could have done it myself, but I am lazy. So what? I didn't have the headache of spending several hours tearing my dash apart.

IIRC, the guy took off the entire center piece and put the HU in from the back (instead of sliding it in through the front). I don't know if the screws were there from the previous install or if the stock ones work. This was done at a reputable car stereo shop that is an authorized Alpine, Kenwood, Rockford Fosgate, JL and Eclipse dealer and installer.

I have a 7873 w/ the flip out face... I have it so that when i take off the faceplate, the stereo is flush with the trim panel. I couldn't have it set back more because the faceplate would rub with the trim peice sometimes causing it to not flip down.
