timing belt question

i know it is supposed to be changed every 60,000 miles, but i don't exactly have any money right now. my mechanic says that hes pulled timing belts out of cars that have 80,000 miles on them and look brand new still. so my question is, how far can i go before i should really start to worry about it snapping?

58,000 unless you've got the money to redo the engine when it snaps
