Question .... about auto transmission

Besides a burnt out transmission what will be the reason a tranny will not engage into drive or reverse, Ive read something about automatic transmission bushing and cable going bad on these cars. reason Im asking is because the transmission had no problems at all the fluid is still red but it doesnt go into drive or any other shift position when the shifter is moved on this 90 maxima se.
help please

pull the shifter to 2...if it moves it's the bushing..if not then tranny is waving bye to u.
