what is changed when the rebuild a transmission

I got a quote for 700 to rebuild the transmission for a 1990 se auto but the torque converter is not included. is it neccesary to change the torque converter? What is the pump they talk about in the transmission
also is rebuilt better than a used one? also are 1989-1994 auto transmissions the same
sorry for all the questions but I cant search nor was I able to goole the questions I needed to ask

- if there's a good amount of miles on the tranny a new TC might be a good idea. if the fluid is dirty or something went crunch then it's mandatory to change it.
- pump...fluid pump..yeah there's one in there right behind the TC/front cover.
- used...you take your chances since chances are it'll have some decent mileage on it and it might fail soon after install.
- 89-94 are the same as long as it says RE4F02A on the plate in the engine plate..(all VG motors).

(so does this mean that all se and gxe autos have the same trannys.)

If you found a VERIFIED low mileage used one (75K or less), I'd go with that over a rebuilt one. My backside is still sore from the abuse I took on my rebuild, and I don't think it's nearly as good as the original. By the way, $700 for a rebuild is a VERY good price.

I'd go for a 5-speed conversion. Then everyone will worship you.

I had my tranny replaced and it all costed me $800. Find someone who is parting out their max and buy it for cheap and then just pay for a installation. Had my tranny for 3 weeks now and it's freaking awesome.

VG motors were found in:
89-91 SE
89-94 GXE

all run the RE4F02A tranny
