HP Boosters

Alright guys, i've been trying to turn my car into a sleeper on the road, but in order to do that, i'm gonna need some hp boosts; now i know that no superchargers or turbos are made for the 93 Maxima, so i was wondering if you guys could list some things i could do (they can be small) to bump the hp up

Thanks

-aftermarket y-pipe (warpspeed or cattman)

-performance exhaust

-intake (CAI or pop charger)

-underdrive pulley

-racing clutch (is your car a 5-speed?)

-advance timing

-nitrous

-JWT ECU

that's all I can think of off hand, unless you get a turbo fabricated for you.

I bet if we pulled second gear side by side, identical mods, one with the flywheel, one without, mistar flywheel wont be seeing tail lights

not because it added anymore HP than the engine was producing already. the power is just transferred from powertrain overhead to the wheels more efficiently...

I know, I'm not arguing the HP thing, I'm simply saying he wants to know what mods will make him go faster, the flywheel is one of them.

hey, you can go faster for $350+ on the flywheel, like a y pipe which you could of had. :P

j00 forget I bought the car with a busted tranny so I decided to do the flywheel while I had everything out.

Someday I will get a Y-pipe and UDP but now I'm saving up to get some much needed maintence done with.

Don't remind him or he might steal mine before he's done working on it...

I don't think any of these mods actually add horsepower, they just free up horsepower that's already there.

I think the only thing that actually adds hp is turbo, supercharger or nitrous.

lighter wheels
stickier tires
sts
smaller wheels if you want to deal with the speedo change and the raise in cruising rpms
ported heads and intake
piggy back fuel controller to even better tune the jwt tune
ground wire kit
weight reduction
VTEC stickers.... lots of them... and in yellow!
full mandrel bent exhaust system
replace crappy stock intake couplers with silicone couplers (i think the springy type couplers might just cause some intake turbulence... seems viable if the crushed exhaust does it)
full synthetic motor and gear oil
higher compression pistons with ceramic coating on the top of the pistons and on the combustion chambers
molybdenum or however the hell its spelled coating on the sides of the pistons
balance and blueprint of the engine
maybe stronger, lightweight axles?? not sure if there is much to gain there or not
maybe lighten up the valvetrain if you can find the parts to do so
cams

my list can go on and on however, by the time you buy half of these items or less you can do your own custom turbo or s/c setup.

anyone have a lightened crankshaft pulley?
i'm getting a shop to fab one up for me out of aluminum for next to nothing. hopefully it will help free up some power.

I would buy the one that has already been tested and proven on your car. This shop might be able to do it, but it might be iffy. But if it's next to nothing (under $50), go for it... just use your best judgement.

Okay, I've got to ask...what does an underdrive pulley do? If it's smaller than the normal pulley, it'll turn faster at the same RPM's...but why?

The biggest reason people upgrade to an under driven crank pulley is b/c it's lighter. If it weighs less, the motor has to strain less to make the same HP. So in essence, it frees up HP. Also, those pulleys are slightly underdriven, which means it will "under drive" or spin the accessories a little slower, which also will free up a little more HP.

I don't think anybody really has proven dyno'd comparisons, but my guess is that you can make 7 more HP by upgrading this pulley. It's definitely a noticable difference in the throttle response department, which always makes your car a little faster.

Thanks for the info...so the smaller pulley will turn accessories slower, not faster like I thought.

Does this also require a shorter serpentine-belt then, I assume?

Knight4 yeap, you got it. accessories spin slower. Also yes you will need 3 new belts. Aaron knows the PN for those though

They are in the FAQs section in the 3rd gen forum. ASP under drive pulley belt sizes.

I have two less bolts than you do aaron so I think mine will be a bit lighter overall...

I wish someone would just come out with a lightened pulley. I think the underdriving is pointless as only about 15% or so of the hp increase comes from underdriving.

i don't want to underdrive my crankshaft, i just want it lightened.
aaron,
who makes the crankshaft pulley for the vg30e?
unorthodox racing?
i thought they just made the accesory pulleys

I just had my underdrive pulley put on last week, unorthodox racing.
The power increase is very noticable, the under drive is only 15% so
you don't notice the drain. Worth every penny, Just do it.

Yes, UR makes your UDP. You aren't underdriving your crankshaft (is that even possible?).

if you're going to get a UR pulley check their website for some deals. they usually sell some for pretty cheap due to blemishes and such.

i didn't mean underdrive the crankshaft..lol
i meant in one way or another, i don't want to run a smaller pulley. if it came down to smaller pulley or nothing at all, i'd go with the UR pulley. but i'll see what happens with the fab work i'm having done.
anyone know what the weight of our stock cs pulley is? the ur pulley weight?

I don't think anybody has weighed their stock crank pulley. But it's pretty dang heavy! You are saving quite a bit of weight by going with the UR pulley. Dont' be so concerned about underdriving your accessories. It's such a SLIGHT under driving of the pulley that it doesn't effect anything.

For me, it did effect my altenator power. I had two 10" subs in the trunk years ago and while sitting at a stoplight and blasting the AC, the headlights would dim slightly everytime the bass hit. That MIGHT have been b/c of the UDP I just installed. But it's hard to tell. It's such a small change that I wouldn't worry about it. I would get the UR pulley b/c it's been tested and proven.

hey aaron,
i can imagine how much lighter the ur pulley would be over the stock pulley. it's dam heavy!
well my concern is the effect on my stereo. with no a/c or heater on my headlights still dim. i'm running 3 amps and producing around 1900rms. i have a rebuilt alternator (120a) that keeps my voltage high (14.5v at idle).

i want a pulley custom made so i can keep the same diameter of the stock pulley but still lose 10-15 lbs off of the crank. if i had them make it smaller i'd have a mystery on my hands as to determining the new belt sizes.
another reason for getting a pulley manufactured is because of the cost of the ur pulley. the cheapest i've seen it so far is 199.00 usd before shipping. i'm in toronto so shipping is always ridiculous. then you add canadian conversion, duty and brokerage fees. it gets quite expensive.

i do like the fact that their pulley is tested and proven though...hmmm...i'll have to make a decision i guess between trying something new or going with the known product.

one last thing,
do any other companies make lightened accesory pulleys (ie; alternator, ps, water pump, ac)?
is it worth having those lightened? my guess is that it isn't worth the money nor the minimal gains ya might see from it.

I don't think anybody else makes pullies for your motor. But I could be wrong. If you are running a stereo, I wouldn't reccomend turning the alty slower.

Yeah UR is not cheap! So getting one made might be a better option for you. If the shop knows what they are doing.

if it was 199.00 shipped i'd go for it most likely but with everything else added to the cost it gets way too expensive for something such as a pulley.

thanks for all your help!

check URs site they normally have some "blemished" ones for half that.
you could also change the pulley on the alternator to make it spin faster (smaller pulley) which would keep the amps up while still freeing up some HP just not quite as much
