Howdy folks,
As I mentioned in previous posts I just acquired a 1993 Maxima GXE, Auto. I don't have a lot of money to spend but I would like to know what I can do to get some more power out of the engine. Once the car starts going it flys but the 0-60 time isn't that great. While I realize that it is an Auto I thought someone might know how to get some more starting power from the Max. Please keep in mind that I am not a millionaire and that the whole car cost me $6500( I admit I got a really good deal..I think/hope) If I can get a list of the best performance mods for the money I would appreciate it. I am sure that other owners who don't have a lot of money to spend would appreciate the info too.

Thanks for all the help,
Roman

P.S. When I say I don't have a lot of money I mean that anything more than $300 would be considered a lot of money.(I'm a poor college student)

First power mod I would suggest is an intake of some sort.
You can get a cone filter & adaptor from $60-120. that will give you "ABOUT" 6 hp. it will rev much easier and acceleration will be noticeablly better. it won't make you go roadkill Supras or anything, but you'll feel the difference.
With that, you could also get a strut tower brace to help tighten up the cornering. they run about $60. you can purchase both from courtesy nissan. 1-800-527-1909.

if you want to spend a little more and get more power, I'd highly suggest getting a Cold Air Intake. They run about $220, but will net you more power and overall better performance. Since it's a cold air intake, you won't see "heat soak" anymore on hot days.. (if you've ever noticed, your car loses quite a bit of power on hot days or when sitting in traffic because the air under the hood is very hot. the CAI counteracts this by drawing in outside air- which is substantially cooler. colder air= more dense= more power for the engine)

it takes a little more to install also (you have to cut a hole in the fender well, just behind the battery tray. no real biggie)
They are made by Place Racing, and you can purchase them from Cattman Performance. http://www.cattmanperformance.com

Also check out his site for other cool mods. he makes mods ONLY for Maximas. (Infinifi I30 is same as a maxima, except for the badging and body panels).

Where to buy?

I notice that you mention I can get the cone & filter at Courtesy Nissan, is this just a nissan dealership or a specialty parts supplier.
Can I get those parts at any nissan dealer?

you can get that stuff from SOME dealers, but not many. Courtesy is a "regular" nissan dealer in Richardson, TX. They are a very large supporter of maxima.org, and they sell a lot of aftermarket and high-performance parts for all Nissans.
Prices are very good, quite a bit better than the local dealer even. i.e. when I replaced the front exhaust studs on my car, it cost me $10 less after shipping than it did to buy the same parts at a local dealer.

Also, Kaleb, (who owns a 93GXE) works in Courtesy's parts department. He's very active with maxima.org.. really cool guy and knows more about all maximas than most nissan technicians do!

they have a website http://www.courtesynissan.com, their parts site is http://www.courtesyparts.com
Kaleb is developing the parts website, and it's still in development. many of the things they sell aren't listed on there yet.
Basically they can get (or tell you where to get) just about anything you would want to put on your car.

Also, for other mods, check out http://www.nopi.com and http://www.stillen.com
stillen's prices are higher than many others, but they sell high quality stuff and they usually know what they're tlaking about.

If I were you I would get an intake and a muffler first. You can get both for around $300, unless of course you get a CAI. I'd recomend the CAI even though its a lot more you'll regret not getting it in the long run. Its hard to modify the max on a tight budget. It can be done though, I still have to deal with the same problems.
