Shift Lock
Generally this is due to a blown fuse. My mom's Camry wouldn't go in gear without depressing the shift lock because I had blown the fuse for the rear tail lights. No taillights = not safe, so the shift lock was activated. Check your fuses. The other idea the manual says is that the shift lock is activated on cars that have a low battery charge. Maybe have your battery checked out.
U have a bad switch.. There's two that can do it but more than likely just one bad. I had the same problems a few years back. Worked sporadically, then nothing at all. I used the little orange button for a while, then had it fixed when it was in for something else.
