Now, I'm not here to get flamed, start an arguement, or get laughed at....okay! I know the subject of a Twin Turbo in a Max has been thought of as delusional. But, in my search to turbo my car (which is happening as we speak since I decided against a rebuild!) I found a guy at my local Nissan dealer that is the foreman in the service dept. I don't let Nissan "mechs" touch my car, but this guy knew his $hit! I drove him to their employee lot where he showed me a VERY impressive black '87 Max, turbo, nitrous, cams.....,<drool>. He said that his project this summer is to modify a Twin Turbo into a J30. He talked as though he already had the body, but I wasn't sure. I'm going to try and get pics of the process if he'll let me. We'll see. I just wanted to hang a steak out in front of you guys till then....

Been there, done that. The J30 is based of the 2+2 N/A 300zx. It uses the same engine with a different body. I can see how a TT swap would work. Lots of work but it could be done.

PS: Did you get my email?

Yes, I emailed you back. Huh? Did you get mine? Are you on AOL? I still have a few questions if your free for a few minutes to IM. Are you saying that the TT has been done? I feel left out of the loop!

I am going turbo though. I thought it would cost more than it will! No one ever gave me a tag price, I suppose there's really not one, I've found engines from $400 to almost $2,300 for a single turbo! The two I'm looking at now are close to $1,000, just some minor differences that need to be addressed first. Both engines have under 40k miles, talk about rolling back the speedo!

Oops Yeah, I just sent you a reply. I have instant messanger but I can't get on now. I think AOL is having problems with its instant messanger service thing. I'll be on as soon as possible though. Do you have ICQ? My screen name is somewhere in this window(either an icon or on the left thing under my name so check that..

I think someone mentioned that they were having problems with AOL's IM system. I saw it in the 'off topic' stuff. But Chris, if/when you get pics, I wanna see!

Hmmmmmm....

Good question. We were talking about Max's, but that is a legitimate question. I suppose we'll just have to see. I'll try to find out next time I talk to him.

are you talking about doing a single turbo Z engine swap or are you going to custom turbo your existing maxima engine?

sup fellas, I was wondering what is an estimate $$$ for all the necesary things to get the z's turbo engine in the max. I heard the single turbo z engines prior to the 1990 fit with minor mods to the max...? Will the TT engine need alot of modifing?

The gentleman I talked to is putting in a Twin Turbo. I'm simply doing the single turbo mod. He just gave me the link to a site that has the Z turbo for $650 with a year/ possible 5 year warrenty and low mileage. I've not called them yet on the mileage, but if it's consistant with every other engine place I've called, it'll be below 35k miles. The next best price locally in Tennessee is $1,300 with a 4month warrenty. The modifications to do the swap appear to be more time consuming and a pain, than anything else. Modified intake pipe, wastegate, etc. I'll try to get pics of the install of mine to show. Should go in the shop in a week or two.

Well I had another question, I was thinking of purchasing parts such as the Y pipe, CAI, clutch and flywheel for my max because im doing a project for school on increasing horsepower but I want to get the turbo engine also which will hopefully be in a couple of months, but heres my question if I purchase those parts know will it be useless for the other engine or will I still be able to use these parts with the turbo engine? cuz i dont want to buy parts i'm only going to use for a month or 2..

Buying parts....

If you are going turbo in a few months, don't waste your money. For one, the Z engine exhaust system for the driver's side (rear wheel drive/ front of engine sitting in the max) is where the turbo is located. The manifold comes down and then raps around over top the transmission, joinging the other manifold, then running out the back. So, headers and a y pipe for a max won't work. The clutch will work but I'm not sure about the flywheel (I think yes though) and the CAI may have to be modified a little, but the intake for the Z has to be modified a little anyway, at least that's what I've seen so far.
I ordered my engine today, it should be in Monday. Car will go in for about 4+ weeks and come out a BEAST!

I ended up getting them at a local place who orders them from a warehouse. The warehouse gets them from Japan and gaurentee low mileage (under 35K). These are complete and was told that sometimes they even come with the plugs and wires. Total: shipping, tax = about $1,400. I was told that I shouldn't pay over $800. I couldn't find anyone that cheap, except those that didn't come with a turbo and starter, even that was $950. So, for a complete engine with low miles and a 4m warrenty, I think the price is worth it. Having the engine swapped will cost $450 + modificatins to piping and front motor mount, which shouldn't run more than another few hundred dollars. I'm also looking into an ecu for it, but for some reason JWT is hesitant to respond. We'll see.

You didn't get a JDM motor did you? Just be careful and inspect that thing when it comes in. You find anything missing/bad/wrong don't touch it and return it. The reason you get JDM engines cheap and plentifully is because they have tests every 30k or so miles there that is very tough. Most people just buy new cars when this happens. For this reason they beat the living **** out of the sports cars to get their money's worth. Just a little heads up for you..

Thanks for the heads up. But, it's not a cheap engine, $1,400. It's supposed to had been tested, and my mechanic is going to run through it too for leaks, check oil pump, compression, all that. My mech. used to head a service dept. at a local dealership, then went out on his own. No one says anything negative about him or his work. I'll be carefull!
