MANY props to SARIN aka 3 gen wanna be maximase86.

He went out of his way to inspect the engines and pick the best one for replacement. The engine place agreed to replace the engine site unseen. Even though I offered to email them the pic links.

Just to let you know, Sarin also responsible for lending a trailor to we could get Chris's car back to Seattle for us to work on.

Sarin has absolutely nothing to do with any of this except for lending a BIG HELP to me and Chris.

Dude if you want anyone banned, just let me know. hahahaha

Alright. I took a look at the two they had. I picked one out and it should be delivered monday. I was gonna take pics but the smart person I am forgot to charge the batteries. Popped the oil cap off both of them, shined a flashlight in there and they both appear to be clean, with no signs of heat marks or rusting. The water pumps on both looked really clean too. But one of the motors was beat up on the outside more (the name plate is half torn of, heat shield is all dented up, and the engine block had some staining from what seems like a coolant/oil leak.

Nope. I haven't got the TO bearing from Nissan yet. There's quite a bit of work to do on the jdm engine. ie... replace ks, front/rear seals etc.....

is the Nissan unit the same as the NTN?

Engine work doesn't take that long. If you were to do the studs while I did the intake, I dont see it taking much more than an hour - hour 15mins

stupid importer. I guess I should ask to work tommarrow?

It sounds like they tried to dump the "crappiest" VE on the wrong people... (by Maxima gurus Jeff92SE and MaximaSE86).

You guys don't have to rush. Just do the best you can do.

Thanks again you guys for helping out so much. Keep me up to date.

Ahahaha. He won't see this until after work.

Anyhow. He IS helping a little so far. I just ordered some accessory belts and the upper/lower radiator hoses from his hook up with Napa so that's not bad. I'll ask him to help when it's swap time also.

Anyway, the replacement engine is scheduled to arrive Monday. I'll try to get over there this week to tear it down

can I join the circle jerk?

Umm, the NTN bearing is the same one that Nissan uses. stay away from BCA.. Make sure the new bearing has the tiny spring clips on the ends of it. sometimes they come with it, sometimes they don't. (check to see if Nissan sells them separately. if so, then order some just to be sure)..
Also ACT and Exedy use the same NTN bearing in their kits.. it's good.

That's why I asked. I wasn't paying attention to the odometer when we moved the car.

Actually, it only has about 1k, but I made three runs at Woodburn and was so disappointed with my massive wheelspin that I spent probably 30 minutes practicing out in the boonies, so it has the equivalent of maybe a few thousand miles. I would like to just keep it in, since I am stretching my budget as it is. Since I only drive about 2-3k a year, it should last me a few years at least.

The only clutch-related item it should need is the TO bearing (the one that came with the clutch wasn't the right one) and I think Jeff mentioned that earlier.

Jeff has a very detailed list of things to fix/replace.

Sarin (aka Viet assassin) took a look before they had it delivered. I have not seen it. But my pops said the valvetrain looked clean. You can't really determine the coolant passage's condition w/o taking the wp off. I'll have to see tomorrow. But as long as this one isn't as bad as the first, I'll probably just flush it out with water and deal with it.

Bought my own set yesterday. You need to get those upper/lower rad hoses out to me sometime.

Update: Tore down the new engine last night. 10x cleaner than the old pos one I got. All the water passages look sparkling. And the valvetrain has no varnish at all. Haven't pulled the waterpump yet but I don't expect to see anything odd. Will try to take some more pictures tonight.

My friend actually had a problem with the NTN bearing with his ACT on a 92se. One of the tabs on the side broke clean off and caused some trouble shifting after that.

And Courtesy does sell those spring clips for each tab. Call them up and talk to Kaleb. He sold them to me when I did my clutch a while back.

Whose yo daddy? Like how the outside of the motor is all shiny? That'll look nice in Chris's car.....oddly I don't know why there is red spray paint on the TB though....the other motor had it too. So Jeff are you planning work on Saturday? I might be able to help that day, or Sunday.

BTW, it's Khmer Assasin...not Viet.

Got some new pics of the new engine. Bottom of page three. Need to take out that stupid auto bushing from the crank! Any ideas?

Also look at that rear main. Not a drop of oil.

I did this once on an S10 but it was removing the polot bushing for the manual trans (looked the same though).

I took a hack saw blade and cut one side then it came out pretty easy.

Man, this is so strange reading about my car, when I am nowhere near it. It's almost like one of those shows where someone dies and they watch what is going on, like the movie "Ghost."

I finally secured a set of wheels to roll around in until it's done.

Feast your eyes on this bad boy:

The best part is the interior:

It's an adorable little 87 Chevy Spectrum AT with no AC, no PS and a whopping 70 hp. It sports some killer 155-80-13 tires and a driver's seat out of a Saturn, since the original one broke. Oh, I almost forgot -- it has a Kraco tape deck woo w0000!!!

Can that thing make it up the hill to your house?

It can barely make it up the hill. I usually get a running start of about 35 mph and by the time I get to the top, it's going 25.

It has multiple exhaust leaks, including one at the manifold. It also has no rear brakes and a torn CV boot, so the axle will need replacing soon.

My father-in-law owns a body shop and he bought it back from an insurance company for $50 about 5 years ago. He just straightened out the rear end and (half a$$ job, too) and did a quick paint on the part that he had to fix. It was hit above the bumper and below the rear window. He straightened out from about the door back. If you look carefully in the picture, you can see it has a bit more shine behind the door. You can't tell in the pic, but the hatch is still dinged up, since it was still functional.

Now, whoever needs a cheapo ride gets to borrow it. This is my second time around hahaha (first time was when my Celica threw a rod).

Hey Chris....I think I have 13" studded snow tires if you need a set for the winter. Better driving that than then the max in snow.

Sweet, Jeff! Now I just need to figure out a way to come get it

Hey, Shawn, what are you doing tomorrow? hahaha

Thanks, Sarin, but I actually have a nearly brand new set of Cooper Weathermaster studded tires on steelies for the Max. It is awesome in the snow, especially with the LSD. I have to give the Silver Bullet back when I get the Max, anyway.

We also have the QX4 and I have a set of studded snow tires (Les Schwab winter trax) for that, too. Last year when we had the big storm, I drove them both and had zero problems.

Hey Chris! Pick up your car!! It's 99.99% done! Got everything hooked up yesterday. Cripes another 10 hour day! Put straight water in and normal oil/Toy filter in. Started right away. No vtc tick! And the car runs on the JDM coils. So that's good. We were trying to figure out a slight miss but I think it's just how the exhaust sounds. Shock, good call on the water temp sensor. Once the engine went into closed loop, it went nuts. The fans were on 100% of the time and the car started chugging. Once we replaced the sensor, the car ran fine.

Took it for a spin and it runs STRONG. No hesitations, lag or anything. Of course the steering is hard because SOMEONE *cough* Mr. Gone *cough* let all the PS fluid out. I'll have to buy some and put it in along with some antifreeze. I'll dump the water and replace it.

Notes:
1) I found 2 bolts so you have two (out of three) tranny mount bolts on the firewall side.
2) Um whoever worked on the clutch job was ah, well, oh, um, okay, ah, hmmm. .
a) 3 bolts holding the act to the Fidanza were stripped. Luckily I found 3 longer bolts that could engage the threads and torque the unit down.
b) No one cleaned the bellhousing. And the PP and disc had a thin layer of greasy crap all over it. I cleaned it all again. When I drove it there was no chatter and the clutch seems to engage fine. Engages a bit low but that's okay. I didn't beat on it to really test it anyway.

Also, the way Shawn puts sealant on everything is rookie time. Geez man, how about NOT using the whole tube of sealant bro. hahaha
