need info:intermittent fuel pump prob 93 SE
 

Have problem that comes and goes, the fuel pump quits periodically but can't seem to get a handle on why. Sometimes it just cuts out but comes back on; like on xprsway and engine restarts, other times it totally quits an takes multiple on/off with key till you hear pump restart; then engine starts again. Problem is other than extreme irritation of restarting it otherwise runs extremely well. My mechanic got an error code on the brain and replaced it but it has continued to do it. Of course I told him he should have replaced the pump but he isn't convinced that its actually the problem. So what else could it be.

It's the pump. An OEM will run $250-300. A Walbro kit is around >$100.

I replaced mine after it died one time too many (as you described), with the Walbro. It has run well for 15K miles.

Not as quiet as the stock pump but it works well. You can replace the pump in half an hour with common hand tools. Take out the bottom cushion of the rear seat, the pump is in the fuel tank, under the cover in the middle of the floor.

don't think our fuel pumps are known to go bad (correct me if i'm wrong). what condition is the fuel filter? that might be clogged if it hasn't been changed in awhile

could also be the fuel pump relay in the trunk

My fuel pump died on my white max. Only time either one of them ever broke down on me *knocks on wood*. My replacement was only $100.


BTW Stoken, I have a working fuel pump for sale. $35 + shipping. Less than 1000 miles of use. Let me know if you are interested.

OK, a little note its really a 93SE, thanks for the responses, I really have never had an intermittent pump other cars of mine its either run or quit. The filter's good that's something of a no brainer. The car's got 160k on it, the regulator's (in the trunk?) where...(is it the round device mounted under the rear window deck next to the speaker). Just as note, from another thread/post I took the rear seat out and looked at the sending unit wiring. I wasn't really happy about the condition of the wiring harness under the seat but could not see any really problem there.

Even though you check the fuel pump harness, if you wasn't really happy with the condition of the harness you should really start there. My car has always started, never stalled until one day when I was ready to leave work. Crank and no start, WTF. Luckily I installed a few pressure gauge many years ago for this very same reason, just in case it didn't start I will know within a few seconds if it's fule or ignition related why it's not starting. So when my car didn't start that day I pop my hood and notice i had no fuel pressure. First thing I check was fuel pump relay, that was good. Then I pulled my rear seat cushion to check the pump and this is what I found.

Keep in mind I never had a single starting or stalling problem until that day so I never had a reason to check that harness prior to that day. As you can see from the pics, I cut and by-pass the burnt wire and all was well.
