advice on locks

1989 SE- I broke the key in the driver side door and the broken piece is lost somewhere in the lock. I cannot see it but can feel it when I put another key in. There is nothing to grab onto with needle nose pliers.

Is there any way to get the lock apart or do I need to buy a new lock?

your key is metal, magnets attract metal, a powerful enough magnet will pull the key out of the lock.
Any other questions?

professional locksmiths do it with a slightly more high tech version of the device.

I've never had need to do it than g-d
i'm normally missing the key entirely!
in principal it should work with magnetizing the key itself (assuming he can get enough windings around it)

Thank you. This is better than "big o'le magnet" that your first reply had. Please try to be more descriptive in the future. (VS being criptic and generally like Shawn posts) This is NOT Maxworld here.

You got a problem with max-world bub?

I like being cryptic, it encourages people to think. Too many people want every answer handed to them and then they'll question it because they don't like the answer.

A big ole honkin magnet will still work it's just a much bigger pain to use.
I used to play with them at radio shack alot, that and the remote control cars on that big slab of slick tile in between the us and the other side of the mall.

that card won't help a key broken in the lock though, they'll unlock the car, but not neccesarily remove the key.
I have nextel's roadside anyhow, better coverage. Includes free gas :P

So that means you should contribute to it??????? I have a hard enough time with the newbies. I don't need you and shawn adding to it. Makes sense?? Especially when I've overlooked you sales threads. Which I don't mind because of the nice deals you give people. But on that note, I hold you to a higher level than others here also. Again, makes sense?

oh, cmon my whoring is rarely that bad here.
Yeah some of the newbies are a pain, ok most of em are.
I know I get held to a higher level, and by the same extension I know I get more slack because of the mutual respect.
and we really should take this to PM

well make sure you have another key around...spare?

take off the inner door panel...then reach under the plastic and unbolt the door handle. there should be 1 spring clip (plastic) to undo and 2 10mm nuts...maybe 2 wires...(i'm thinking SE here)

once that's done u can take the handle out and you can probably see the lock cyl. take a paper clip or a metal pick and push the broken bit from the back. you MIGHT need to prop open the shutter/door and the key SHOULD pop out. if that doesn't work you might have to take the cyl off the handle...and then pop it out. get some WD40 in there to make sure everything moves smoothly.

bolt it back up..get some lube in there and you should be good.

Kids!!! Settle Down!!

OK, Technically I'm a newbie to this forum---but I'm old enough to be most of your Fathers. JUST TRY picking up a key with a magnet!!! Magnets are attracted to IRON. Iron is in steel. Most keys are mostly brass. Try picking out the partial key with a dental pick. Geeezzzz--kids.
