Brake Squeal

Anyone know of an effective cure for low speed brake squeal ?. Only happens under light brake pressure and speeds under 15mph. Do 91 J30's have anti-squeal shims or anything like that?.

you can get shims for them, some brands of pads come with them.
Does the squealing change with the amount of pressure you apply to the pedal?

Squeal is pretty much a single tone. Any more than light pressure on the pedal it stops. Mostly happens when parking /manouvering, when you're just feathering the pedal. I've checked the pads and they look pretty new, but not sure where any shims should be to tell if they're missing. Would the spray/paint on stuff help in this situation?

try getting the rotors cut and sanding/roughing up the pads, that should stop the squeak

Rotor work sounds expensive. I was hoping for a $10 fix. Sanding the pads sounds like it would be worth while though. I don't have a workshop manual for the car yet - are the pads easy to remove ?

-get some brake grease! try to find it with 100% silicone
-all sounds are caused by vibration, the pads are making contact with the the caliper and/or rotor and causing a squeal.. so lube up *ALL* contact points with pad and caliper (if u get some on the rotor just windex it off)
-hit the pads with some sand paper to get any glaze off. Glaze could cause uneven contact between the pad and rotor surfaces and cause a squeal too.. there are a few things that make squeal but these are the most common.
-do u get alot of brake dust? that could be the problem too.
-never buy pads that don't have shims already on them.

ps: if u see large/dark burn marks in ur rotor they may have to be cut (10 bucks at most). but thats rare for moderate street use.
good luck..

off topic * holy crap i have 5 stars on my cardomain page!!! wtf?!? is this some kind of joke????

i love u guys

Or you can do it the free method, just drive backwards and use the brakes moderatly hard from around 20-25mph and it will "resurface" the pads, and it should go away

I was just refering to having the rotor resurfaced, should only be about $15 (USD) per rotor
