How to pull Check Engine Light codes?

Hopefully this questioned hasn't been answered before, I spent about an hour searching through the FAQs and stickies without luck.

Anyway, a friend just recently bought a 3rd gen Maxima ('94 GXE) and his CEL came on today. We'd like to pull the code in the morning, but I couldn't find anything about doing so (just a list of codes). I used to own a 4th Gen GLE, and grabbing the code from that was easy. Is it a similiar procedure on the 3rd gen?

Thanks in advance.

Use the 5 mode system since you have a 1994 GXE.

Uh, I found that, dude.

It's a list of the error codes which, albeit helpful, wasn't specifically what I was looking for. I needed to know if the ECM was accessible from a similiar position as in the 4th gen or if it was more difficult to reach. I didn't see any specific information like that in the FAQs. It's going to be pouring out tommorow and my friend doesn't have a useable garage, so I'd rather not be fumbling around for too long.

Great site! Thanks for contributing this info! This should be added to one of the stickies, possibly to the above mentioned thread...

Quick question, though. I don't see anything on the site to help determine whether you should use the 5-mode or 2-mode system. I have a '94 SE. Which would I expect to use? From my experience (or possibly my ineptness), it would seem that I only have the 2-mode system?.

The SE's have the 2-mode system. From the Autozone link above.... "The five-mode system is used in 1993-94 Maximas with VG30E engines. All other vehicles use the two-mode system." In case you dont' know, the 92-94 SE's have the VE engine and the rest of the 3rd gen's have the VG.

Cool!

So much for my attentiveness to detail... (I did know the difference tween the VE and VG, however.)

Thanks!
