this sort of thing has happened to me on my '92 GXE... and has been discussed many times before on this forum... there's even a thread with pictures and all.
For me, it pretty much boiled down to the the speed sensor connector being loose, or something like that. The "connector" is a quarter sized thing right below the fuel filter. My guess is that after a long time and after many oil changes, oil will collect onto this thing and force it loose. The solution is to clean the oil off the top and to tap it gently with a hammer.
Not sure if this is the same problem you have, but it worked great for me.
