I just bought a Maxima!

I won it! Weeee!
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...RK%3AMEWN%3AIT

I'm flying from Indiana to Rhode Island to pick it up Satuday. And driving 1053 miles home!

Am I a little bit nuts? Yea probably.

I'll have better pics to post up when I get her home!

Looks nice. What are your plans for it? Planning on changing those 3-spoke wheels to something else??

first thing you do should be to replace the broken exhaust stud, the leak in the power steering hose, and tighten the e-brake (as he said). Then prep yourself for a new tranny, and you'll be set

Ehh, I'll probably leave the manifold stuf as-is until it causes some sort of problem.

I'll put a new PS hose on, and I honestly hardley EVER use my Ebrake...

The car is a 5-speed and they tend to not go through trannies the way ATs do.

Too bad about the rear bumper, since the car has a recent paint job.

Rims = teh suck

That's a pretty good deal for that car with all of the recent things fixed. I am sure that the dealership quoted the guy the usual insane amount to replace the manifold studs and that helped in his decision to sell.

Have fun with your new ride.

come again? 2 maximas 3 years 3 trannies..and I am definitely NOT alone, I should know. Oh and both have been 5 speeds, and I definitely don't drive like a bat out of hell. I actually haven't seen the autos go out as frequently as the 5-speeds...look around.

Not meaning to scare you or anything...on the contrary, preparing you for the inevitable. Concerning the exhaust stud, I wouldn't worry too much about it either. By the time it DOES become a problem though, you might need a new exhaust manifold, but they're pretty cheap new. There's a guy on ebay that sells them for ~$60 iirc. I bought one for my previous max. I still miss the hell out of it sometimes. That's a great car and a good bargain you got there. You're good for the next 100k at the least.

well, I have owned two VE 5-speeds and both went past 150k miles and both had (have in the case of my current one) the original trannies. I DO drive like a bat out of hell and I practice launches and do long burnouts for fun.

Both of my cars I took care of and serviced them properly. Well, the current one I bought from my brother and he did the 60k and 120k services, but he bought the car with 60k.

If you have had two 5-speed Maximas in three years, than the chances are probably good that you bought them used with over 100k miles on them. There is also a pretty good chance the fluid was never changed and/or the previous owner flogged the car pretty hard. I don't know about the other tranny you had, but I am assuming it was rebuilt? Maybe it wasn't done very well, because they should last a lot longer than a year.

I know several guys have had manual tranny issues, but most of them drive their cars hard and/or race them and most of them bought the car used with over 100k miles. The 5-speeds in the Maxima aren't the greatest, but nothing like the large number of guys with AT problems. Same thing probably happens to them, too. The owner during the first 100k never changes the fluid/services the tranny. Guy on .org buys the car with over 100k and has to rebuild/replace the tranny.

that makes me sick to the stomach. i thought $2,800 was a pretty good deal for a 91 with 87k..i guess it is, but with it i have doubts about the mileage accuracy. i would rather spend $1,600 less with 40,000 more miles and those new parts, easially. carpet and interiors are probably in better shape than my ex dog house (maxima) also. plus it came with the stereo, and those rims (although way too 90's cheapo rims). congratulations..be sure to get a spoiler on there when you get home..have a safe drive.

rhode island is neither a road nor and island........crazy.

thats a nice grab you got there, quick note on the exhaust manifold stud, i just replaced mine and i actuallly felt a little bit of a power increase with it. i 5 broken studs on mine and it sounded like a deck of cards getting shuffled times 1000 yo!

anyway nice car and color but the wheels suck horribly unless youre cheech or chong.

very nice buy and congrats on getting it. i've always loved that color for our maxima's. hope u fix it up really nice and get better rims as well. that car will last u for a long time as long as u take good care of it.

lophix and Red92MaxSE: my car went through 3 auto trannies and one of them was rebuilt. i've had this car for almost 5 years now and the 1st original auto trannie was replaced with a 2nd from a junkyard up in Indiana before i bought the car. now the 2nd trannie went out at 180,000 miles and i bought the car with 135,000 miles on it. i then had the 2nd trannie rebuilt. that POS of my 2nd trannie blew at 210,000 miles after i moved back down to Miami, FL. now i then replaced the 2nd trannie with a '94 GXE auto tranny with 80,000 miles on it "supposeably" and that POS blew out at 225,000 miles so then i was about to sell this car and then i remembered that i had 5-speed parts laying around in my house and just went ahead and did the 5-speed swap. did everything with the help of my dad and spent only about $240 on all the necessary parts and a 2 days to oo the full conversion. and its been 3 months since the conversion and still no problems with it ::knocks on wood:: but there u go it is in fact true that A/T r much more of a problem then M/T. just thought i would share this with u guys.

mine 89 VG 5speed had 185k before the factory trans went out. My older brother, my oldest brother and me gave that car hell everyday of its life. Sad though, it was perfect when my brother brought it home in 96.
Look at how it ended:

Evansville? I'm sorry.
nothing there but cows, corn, beer, and college kids.
(spent a couple years in Terre Haute myself, so I have to say I helped on the beer and college kids part.... and I ate my fair share of cheeseburgers )

umm, congrats on the car! hope it doesn't have too much rust damage from being in New England. then again, it's goign to Indiana which isn't a lot better.. least they don't salt the roads there as bad.

I'm on my second tranny. My first ended at 230K. My new tranny was pulled from a 93 (stronger tranny than previous 89-91 trannies supposedly) with 78k. I doubt that it'll have another 100k in it but when it goes I'll finally get a 5 speed .
