Easy taillight modification

I don't know how many of you have tried to modify your taillights, but since there really aren't any aftermarket ones available, I did a little tinkering with mine. Inside the lens housing, you've probably noticed that for the rear turn signals, there's an amber lens resting inside that you can easily remove (in pieces) to make your signals clear. There's also a refractor lens inside each reverse light and turn signal that you could remove to make them look darker and a little clearer. I don't know how bright they would look from behind (I only removed the refractor lens from inside my reverse lights), but mine are already pretty bright just from removing the amber lens. I think you might be able to do the same with the brake lights, but I'll have to check on it. Sorry I don't have any pics up so you can see what I'm talking about... I'll try to get some up soon.

My tailights are clear.....or are you talking about the bulb itself? If so, please don't remove it. Clear turn signals are so annoying. They bring nothing to the table.

Actually, I was just talking about the signal lens, not the bulb. I still use orange bulbs, but removing the lens inserts, I think, makes them look a little more modern. Except that they don't really match the center section anymore.

brake light swap

I was wondering what do you think is the closest shape or size brake light that you could access aftermarket lights for. Im not talking anything plug and play But something I would only have to do minor body filling. How about the 4th gen light shape .I might go out to the junk yard tommorw to see how close it is. But im going to get someother type of light that I can get a nice looking light in.

ummm.... you could see your orange without the signal being on???
I have seen countless taillights, had 4 pairs myself, and I have never seen the amber from the outside.

Not to sounds like a riceboy, but to me Skyline R32 & R33 tails resemble 3rd gen tails in shape....they are definitely a custom project though.

No, I didn't mean that they looked amber all the time. I only did it to make my lights look different from others, since there aren't many options for doing so. Removing the amber lens does give you the option of having clear or amber (or any other color) lights, though, which I did for a while.

I like the R33 idea myself, keeping with the Nissan family, but that's a very well-done WRX conversion.

Yeah, I like the factory lights, too, but if everyone had the same opinion on cosmetic styling, all of our Maximas would look the same.

The thing is, what I did to my lights didn't cost anything, didn't make them look radically different, and definitely didn't make them look like a ricer mod.

OMG hahah!!! I did that two weeks ago! accept I took all the refractors out. I got pics they look really good actually. (not ricey) if you take all the plastic pieces on the bottom out (the blinkers &* reverse one's) the whole bottom part looks "Smoked", also to add to the look, paint the inside piece where the bulbs are. Take the bulbs out, tape over the siver dish looking things, and paint black. Then it looks nice & smoked. I'll post my pics later.

I was thinking about removing the refractors from the turn signals, so they'd match the reverse lights, but I thought they'd be too bright. Is there a big difference? Also, did you do anything with the brake lights?

you better be careful my friend... changing you signal/brake lights to a different color other than amber or red could get you into a nice little bind with the law... usually other colored mods for the tailights and signals is only for show or what's considered off-road usage... just food for thought...

I also did a mod with the front blinkers. They look brand new & are also clear. You can see the bulbs. It Looks Awsome! I'll post some pics later.

what i'm saying is that your not supposed to (legally) change you blinker lights to anything but red or amber... though i have seen blue and clear on the streets but i know its not legal...

Yeah, I did the same with my front blinkers, too. Probably about a year and a half ago, and I've never been pulled over or ticketed for the rear lights being clear. Got me worried anyway, so I replaced the clear bulbs with some amber ones.

I got two tickets for the blue lights in the front cornering lamp. I go them off both times after changing the bulbs back but wasnt worth the hassle so I ditched the blue.

i think im that guy or if not it might have been another guy that lives up in Indiana north of Indianapolis. i did this mod about almost 2 yrs. ago and i didn't think this would actually end up here. anyways i did my whole taillights and it wasn't worth the hassle because it still looks the same to me. the reverse lights and the signals r completely cleared out with no reflectors in them and the same for the taillights which still looks the same. i got pics of this in my cardomain site on page 8 so feel free to check them out. heres one:

I thought that this mod was somewhat worth it, but it for sure took too much time for what was done. My turn signals are clear and I've had them for quite a while like that. I've never been pulled over for them and I've never even been warned about them. I guess I've just been really lucky?

So how exactly do you take the refractors out of the tail light, they just pop out through the clips?

no just crack them out. all i used was a sharp screwdriver to crack the reflectors carefully without breaking the clear peice and a needle nose pliers to take out the broken the peices. took me about 10 min. to do this damn insignificant mod but it makes it look different from other 3rd gens. i also painted the MAXIMA letters in black along with the chrome trim.

I did it. I didn't have to crack out the reverse lights, but I had to crack the turnsignal refractors. And I got some amber bulbs so my car is still legal!... WOOT!

Here's some pictures of the lights without refractors
