Newbie question
Okay guys, first off thanks for all the info that I have found on this site so far. So, anyway, I am looking for a 3rd generation Max to use as a daily driver while saving for another vehicle. I think I have found a suitable candidate in a 91 Se 5 speed that I found at a local dealer. Its rough, but I don't mind working on vehicles at all, but one thing I am worried about is what appears to be a power steering fluid leak inside the engine compartment. The power steering resevoir was almost empty, so I'm guessing thats what it was. Anyway just wondering how common this problem is, and if it presents any other problems in a 3rd gen Maxima than in other vehicles to repair. Anyone replace their power steering pump?, did you do it yourself?, and if so how much?......Thanks again....
Mine PS is fine and doesn't leak. My fathers 91 doesn't either so I'm not sure how common it is.
This page will give you and idea of how much an aftermarket power steering pump will cost http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBr...ction=loadPage <--- link does't work but that part is about $100. An original Nissan OEM one might be more expensive.
Now I haven't tried it on my own and I'm not sure how the quality is compared to an OEM one.

It seems easy to do. But first I would locate where the leak it first. Your leak might lye elsewhere and it just might be a cheaper fix.

Generally the leak comes from the high pressure hose that goes from the pump to right behind the pass side strut tower. You can replace this hose for about $40 from Pepboys or wherever and it's pretty easy. Replacing the pump is a little bit of a pain because the axle and steering rack make it hard to get in and out but it's not that bad.
