My guess is that you've got rust and a leak in the fuel-filler region. There was a recall for this when the cars were new.

Most Nissan dealerships are douches these days though, and will try hard not to do recall work on such an old car.

when you're outside the car use your nose to find the source of the smell.
as pulsar stated one possibility is the filler neck.
another is the fuel lines by the engine starting to weep fuel, not unusual to happen as the weather gets cold and the rubber contracts.

That happened to my car last winter....Found most of the clamps on the rubber fuel rail hoses were loose. I tightened them all up{seems like there's a hundred of them } and i haven't had the smell anymore.

"heats on it smells inside"
Air comes in from front. I Suppose leak under hood. Replace rubber tubes before driving, its a fire hazard. Tubes: incoming from filter, connector between banks [at engine front] and the return tube.

Btw, replace all old tubes to keep running, not just gasoline. Twelwe yrs is just too much for rubber.

well i tried to find the smell with my nose but it seems almost impossible, im beginning to notice that it only does it sometimes, abotu 50% of the time. My brothers a nissan salesman so im sure if it is the filler neck, the dealership will fix it for me.

Its still good to locate the problem, (troubleshooting is not always mechanics skill, and if it is, scary [of their status] bosses will fire him...):
- if its after driving [fuel slushing in the tank] of after fillup, possible filler leak.
- if with no driving [low fuel], its pressurized fuel tubing from tank located pump to engine and back.

i had this problem, if it only happens when the engine is cold, then im 99.1% sure its the fuel lines that are contracted, once the engine block heats them, it will probably go away. check all the clamps again, and tighten them all. i had to replace one of the hoses that was under the intake manifold plenum. so have fun.

hey thanks, yah i noticed that once the car heats up to full operating temp, the smell goes away outside and smells a little bit inside (but goes away once the heat is on for a while, so i think its just getting the smell otu) im gonna check all the hoses, thanks a lot, im glad i got a max!

i figured out that the smell isnt coming from the filler neck but is coming from under the hood, so should i just replace all my fuel lines? how much will they cost?

"how much"
5$ if "My brothers a nissan salesman"

If you want problems, replace one bit today, next bit feb, next.... If u do not like adventurous life, renew all at once. My guess is 30$ if you do not go to nissan shop. If no brothers and u do go nissan, 10x but then u got the same tube with Nissan logo...
