Then why does Nissan recommend 91?

I thought they only recommended 91 on the VE because of the increased compression ratio.

I thought they recommend 93 on the VE and 91 on the VG. My mistake. Don't have a VG manual.. What do they recommend? How about 89?

I always understood that 87 was fine but if you wanted added power use higher grade in the max. I know its not like this for all cars but I think the owners manual says this.

I put 93 in the Max and the G, its only about 4 bucks more a tank when filling up with 93 compared to 89

I use 93 as well as a bottle of octane boost, gasline anti frezze, conditioner, and once a month injector cleaner.

89 would actually be the minimum. 87 starts making it quite a bit sluggish.

Id watch out with that injector cleaner, crazy4maxima used that and a few days later one of his injectors was shot.

I'll agree with that. I put one in the other day and right now I began have rough idles and such. I then changed all my spark plugs and found out that cylinder 2 wasn't performing too well upon looking at my plugs and comparing them. That fixed my issues after my plugs but I had to have my tank blown out and the mechanic told me to use no such thing again unless it's done professionally. I use 93 anyways though since it's like $2/gallon and it's only aroun 10 cent more than 89. I figured that it's only a 4-5 dollar loss. Nothing too bad if you ask me.

I don't recall any manufacture that recommends 93 octane. On Hi-Po version of the engine, they normally recommend or require 91 octane. VG's are recommended to run at least an 87 octane, IIRC 85 octane if you're in higher elevations. I'm not sure about VE's, I don't have a VE owners manual unfortunately but I have put octane ranging from 87-92octane without any extreme side-effects. I was always under the impression that the first Maxima engine that Nissan recommended a minimum of 91 octane was on the VQ-series engines.

I been hearing this weird idea flying around that the lower the octane such as 87 compared to a higher octane such as 93, the 87 is used up faster then the 93. Is this true?

I know that if I use 93 for a 190 mile trip It'll only use a little less than a half tank of gas. If I use 87 the gas goes out (from a half tank) within 50 miles.

So your not just paying for better quality, your paying for more gas in other words. Correct?

I find it odd that the VG downshifts into a lower gear at WOT on premium vs. regular

Go to about 60mph and hit the gas. On my dads car, regular will select 3rd, premium will select 2nd. Maybe its just my dads car?

No you actually pay for better engine detergents also. That is why Shells gas is more expensive than some generic gas station. Even though the difference is like 10-15 cent. You get what you pay for.
