High mounted brake light melting

I have a '91 Maxima, the third brake light must get so hot that it has melted the plastic holding the bulb sockets in. I bought a used light assembly over the internet, and when I received it, it had the same problem and I could not use it. I'm guessing this is a common problem, and was wondering if anyone has a solution such as using a different bulb, etc. Also if anybody has a spare light assembly in good shape, I would be interested in buying it. Thanks
