bolt extraction
bolt extraction
What would be the best way to extract a bolt whose head has snapped off. I snapped the head of my bleeder bolt last winter changing the t-stat and I need to be able to bleed the system again since I have no heat once more.
Do I drill through the bolt, rethread the hole and get a new bolt? Would I be able to fish out any metal particulate with a magnet? I am worried that any debris falling inside would cause problems.
I dont think an extractor set would work since the body of the bolt is fairly deep and it looks seized with the surrounding material.
Any other options?
Thanks

well a bleeder is not a regular bolt. It is softer so it may be difficult.
ez outs should work though...just spray it with pb blaster and let it sit. keep spraying it from time to time. Then drill it out a little more but be careful not to get into the thread.
Other than that you will have to buy a new caliper IMO if its the brake system. If its the clutch system then you will have to buy whatever it is that the bleeder is broken on...you better hope its the clutch system because the MC and SC are both less expensive than a caliper i believe.
I honestly dont know if they make oversize bleeder screws.
good luck

Its actually the coolant bleeder bolt. This would make a full replacement fairly expensive.
I dont want to make anything worse right now, but having heat in -30 degree celcius weather is not even debateable.

Well you could probably bleed the coolant system by parking on a hill so the radiator is the highest point. Then keep refilling the radiator. Keep the heator on full hot so the valve is open. ie.. drive until the engine is warm. Stop let cool. Top off radiator etc...
You can deal with the broken bolt later.
