Rear brake question

I was wondering how hard/ if even possible logistically it would be able to put discs on the rear of my car. I have drums now and i am getting new wheels which will expose my brakes alot and i want discs on back now too. Is it possible? If so what all is involved parts wise and labor wise? Thanks as always

yes it is possible. you need to find an SE and take the rear hub/spindles and brake stuff from that.

If you have drums in the rear then you have a GXE, not an SE. There is a writeup for the rear disc conversion on 4dsc.com

Does the GXE still have the VG30E in it then?

ALL GXE models have the VG30E.
the only 3rd gen that doesn't is the 92-94 SE model, which has the VE30DE.

You can get the rear disc setup from ANY year 3rd gen, even from a GXE with ABS.. just remove the ABS sensor from it and it bolts right on.
You'll need the entire rear strut assembly. basically just unbolt the strut from the car as if you were changing the springs, and pull the brakes off with it. then bolt it onto your car.
You'll also have to replace the parking brake cables, which are a PITA but it must be done.

Expect to pay about $300 for parts and it will take 6-8 hours of work the first time you do it. I did it in about 4 hrs flat a couple weeks ago.

here's my writeup on it:

And the pics.

the DCPxxxx series were when Kaleb and I did the first conversion on my old GXE.
the disk 1,2,3 directories at the bottom are when we did the conversion on Kaleb's GXE.

Man, that way back in the day! I think winter of 99-00 is when we did the conversion on Kaleb's car, and mine was the summer of '99.

if you are going to do it, get all the info you can off the donor car as there are some production changes along the way.

like matt93se Said, Just get the hole spring/shock rear suspension intact w/ disks/calipers already installed. This way you dont forget small part that will delay the install. I think you will also need to change the E-brake cables.

edit: Should have read the hole thread some one alrady gave this link.

I guess my next question, is would i be better off spending 300 dollars somewhere else on my car for now? I dont have any mods other than a high flow air filter and wheels. Should i go for brakes or something else?

what he^^ siad. Brakes and suspension is kinda of like a maintenance thing. Youll feel a big difference with the discs. I wish I knew about the drum to disc conversion 2 years ago. We had a 91 SE that we sold, I could have swapped my drums onto that for the discs..oh well,,its junkyard time
