where can i get paint for my car?
hey fellas, anyone know where i can get some car paint at better deal than wesco?? either local or on the web. i'm looking for a charcoal grey color. courtesyparts.com doesn't post that on their website anymore.
exactly what do you want? Touch up paint in a bottle/spray can? Are you wanting to paint your whole car? Are you just wanting to touch up a small area or a large one?
The best bet for actual true paint is to look in your local phone book for automotive supply stores. Maybe look under PPG, Sherwin Williams, DuPont etc. Napa caries paint as well usually. They sell Martin Senour which is actually Sherwin Williams paint that they put their name on.
If you want just touch up paint then go to the dealer or autozone etc.

better to purchase locally so if there's a problem with color matching the store can usually remix for you or do something for you. if you buy it online then not much you can get if it doesn't match.
with clears, primers, and reducers you can order that anywhere you want as long as it's compatiable with the brand of base paint you're going to shoot.

edit: Just reread what you said. And i see what you mean by mixing.
Let me/us know where you end up buying it from
Also had the same question as Dan, are you going to spray it yourself?
I have some minor body work to do, just haven't gotten around to it

Just did a driver's door. Some jack-a$$ ran into the driver's side door (pulverized the side mirror) and the driver's front fender.
I got a replacement mirror off ebay and painted it using some pepboys "charcoal grey" color, it was tinge greenish, but the paint job came out actually great (looks just like factory after I wet sanded-clearcoated-wetsanded-compounded).
Then I went to local autobody supply store to get the actual color cutom mixed. Since I do not have air compressor or guns, and since I was doing only a driver's door (4 white doors off ebay $50 for all including mirrors), I ended up getting paint mixed in the KH2 Charcoal grey and put in an aerosol spray paint can. I think I paid $17 a can, which was cheaper than some places like paintscratch.com. I would have loved access to compressor and gun, but alas... The aerosol can produced alot of orange-peel effect, but I ended up using alot of elbow grease and sanding in-between
Anyway, I ended up sanding the door down to metal, one coat of primer, 2 coats of paint (with 1500 grit sanding and tack-rag between), 3 coats of clear (1500 grit sanding again). After final coat, I wet-sanded with 2000grit to remove "orange peel", and after I got a completely flat, dull surface, I buffed with rubbing compound.
I have to say that I am shocked at the quality that I acheived. I didn't buff the door yet, but the window frames I buffed and it looks just like factory paint finish. A mirror-like shine and finish. Anyway, I mounted the door via door hinges to the side of my garage so I can paint it. I guess I'll take a picture of the door to show how the paint job came out.
I expected to make a decent enough paint job so that the average person would be fooled into thinking that it was okay, but I have to admit that the door is starting to look better than the cheap body job I got done at local shop on my 2001 pathfinder (full of orange-peel), which I am thinking of wet-sanding and then compounding...
The whole process for one lousy door took two days (I was babysitting my 11mo old daughter) and I still am not finished compounding the rest of the door, but I am so psyched at the quality so far... Will post pics soon. I read the awsm66's posts, and anyway, thank you for all the information that I've gathered from here.
