STS Problems
#3
This is my problem. When i first start my car and everything is cold, switching gears is smooth and pedal response is great. As the car warms up, it takes a little muscle to switch gears and the pedal response and the cars acceleration is a little sluggish. Some one on this forum had mentioned something about my STS, but didnt get into detail. I just need some insight on what might cause my car to do this.

STS shouldn't effect pedal response and acceleration.
FWIW my transmission is the same way, smooth shifting when its cold and gets alittle more 'hit and miss' when its up to operating temp.

i think as the pivot ball warms up it expands and makes it harder to move
ive tryed spacing out the shifter housing with washers and greasing it up but it still isnt nearly as nice as the stocker
depending on how bad mine gets when the weather gets hoter ill proboly go back to a stock shifter thats been shortened to my STS length

If your acceleration is sluggish, it would have nothing to do with the shifter. I would look into your knock sensor and harness.
As for the shifter, I think subs is probably right, the heat expands the plastic pivot ball. Mine has the stock shifter and it shifts smoother when it's warm. In the morning, before the fluid gets warmed up, it is kind of stiff.

has anyone with thier sts broken the small rubber band that sits in front of the shifter rod? has anyone replace the rubber band? or has anyone had to replace the whole assembly? I dont want to weld a metal bar there? let me know?

yeah its a pretty common problem for that part to break. Its not very expensive from a discount dealer. I dont have FAST on this computer or I would give you a part number and price from a discount dealer but I think its around $35 or so.

thanks for the pick!! the metal bar that you welded, is the part rubber on the OEM assembly?
DO NOT DO THIS MOD. If your motor/tranny mounts are worn it will more or less turn your shifter linkage into a transmission MOUNT, which it was not designed to do.
If I could do it all over again, I would have just bought this bracket and go out to eat at Outback+tank of gas instead of doing this mod and a STS.

yea i see what you are saying it will cause more issues with the weld. More less to replace the rubber bridge i'll have to totally remove the shifter assembly? or can i loosen a bolt here and remove the bridge? trying not to get too dirty!!

I feel your pain. You may be able to loosen the bolt that holds up the shifter linkage to the support bracket with out getting under the car...but that is only true if you have already loosened the bolt before lol. The rubber bridge thing is riveted into the whole bracket assembly so you can't just replace the rubber part either.
It's a pain in the azz and you will break all the bolts holding up the cat but jack up the car and get dirty.
Remove the cat's lower brush shield, remove the cat, remove the heat shield, remove bolt holding the shifter linkage up (gonna be kinda hard) then remove the 4 bolts holding the bracket in place (they were kinda odd looking but you can figure it out) replace with the new bracket and reverse the steps.
Oh and if you do install a STS you will have to hammer a dent into the heat shield to clear the bottom of the STS unless you leave it at the stock height.
Good luck.

Mine as been on for about a year. I had to go back 2 weeks after the install to add the loctite, but it's been all good since.

take this guys suggestion to heart, when those nuts do fall off, you will most likely not be able to shift anymore.
I had plenty of time to think about this as I drove home one night in 1st gear, blinkers in full blink, for 5 miles..........

yea i do have a sts already in the car now. and i pretty much left it at stock height so i dont get the shifter scraping the top of the cat's heat shield!! lol
