what is it, why is it running

I have a 92 GXE. On the passenger side , next to the fender, is a silver colored rectangular shaped thing. It has serveral small metal hoses coming from it. It makes noise like it is running or pumping something after the car shut off. I believe it drained the battery because I needed to jump start the car.
Can some one tell me what this is and should it keep running after the car is turned off?

Thanks

Steve

no it shouldn't be running after the car is off

When I shut the car off last nite the noise was there. This morning I tried to start the car and it did start. Ran it for about 15 minutes and shut it off. No sound. Any clues as to what this might mean?
Can an abs actuator be fixed or do you need to buy a new one?

The same thing happened to me a few years ago. It started draining my battery, so I pulled the 3 plugs that go into the front of the abs actuator. I left it sit over night unplugged. Plugged them back in the next morning and haven't had a problem since.

Plugging/unplugging clears also the contacts. That should be done also with the ABS computer in the trunk. I took that box off, cleaned contacts and inserted minuscle bits of contact grease in ecah pin. Now works mucho better.

Originally only some (!?) ABS connectors had this grease, I have now added to all system connectors.

ABS is tunning even after ignition is off sometimes, probably a bad relay (had the same problem on a J30) swap out the relay and you'll probably be fine
