gas milleage improvment?

I'm wondering what simple projects I can invest into (cheaply) to improve gas mileage. without hindering performance too greatly. I've read a few posts that indicate what should be checked if gas mileage is horrible for example 10mpg's or so. My gas mileage is around the 20's. I did read somewhere that by putting holes in the stock cold air intake compartment that holds the air fiter (sorry I'm not sure if that's what it's called or not) that you could improve performance as well as gas mileage. Is this accurate? The reason behind it was that the stock intake was restrictive to air and that by increasing the air to fuel ratio would improve horsepower as well as cause less fuel to be used. can anyone comment?

Look up FP60, otherwise known as Fuel Power.

oh that sounds interesting, I found what I think you mentioned through google. here is the link I used http://www.lubecontrol.com/fuel.htm. does anyone know if this really works from experience. they sell the stuff for $9.00 for 24 ounces, according to how big my gas tank is and how much they say to put in each gallon of gas the 24 once bottle would last 6 or 7 full tanks. in order to continue the gas mileage improvment would you have to continually use the product or would using it a few times be okay for an extended period of time. Also it says it removes stuff from the fuel injectors and other components resulting in cleaning them. My question is, is it bad to do this? Where does all of that stuff go? I've heard that doing things like flushing your radiator, or other components can be bad in some cases becase you could either a. unclog a leak that was being corrected by the "crap" your removing, or b. you could end up cloging other parts of the unit with all of the buildup your trying to remove. I hope all of that made sense. I don't want to end up using a product like this or fuel injector cleaner, only to find that I have to spend a whole **** load of money on replacing my fuel injectors because an amount of buildup was removed and ruined it more.

Getting high mpg and racing do not fit togethter. Having possibility for more hp, will not affect mpg while cruising. But if/when mass is accelerated, it always costs more than keeping the speed steady.

'Any' stock car has restricted intake to keep tones down (and reserve for next year model upgrade.) Opening that one way or other will give possibility to get more hp as more air may be flowing in. All that is regulated at throttle with u foot. Leadfoot means more gas is guzzled IF intake is bigger. Driving nice, no change. Maxima is better: its got also restricted exhaust...

Swiss cheese filterbox is just one costless way to increase airflow at high rpm. 'No change' when airflow is choked with throttle at 2500rpm. Filterbox is just ONE choking airflow limiter in VG30E, figure out the rest, its a challenge.

20mpg city or highway? Pls try to be specific.

AMaxima automatic transmission has autolock -feature which switches gas guzzling tranny turbine 'off' from pwrtrain line. Cold -and/or- Playing with gaspedal means no lock never.
NoLock means that u drive always with automatic turbine ON = 10% higher consumption [lock used ONLY over 40mph, steady drive, warm box]. Warm box means 15mile drive first.

how do you enable/disable the autolock feature, or are you saying that it enables itself when your going faster than 40mph and your engine is warm, and that it disables itself when the engine is cold and the speed is varied?

to answer your question, I get roughly 20 mpg as an average with both city and highway miles, but on the average I am driving highway about 70% or so.

Its an imbedded auto feature where user has 'no' control. As u said. Its funny how user guide does not mention this at all... Novice an grandma will never notice how it engages, works quite nice & silent behind the scenery.

Lock Disabled by TCU:
- before >tranny< warmup (20 minutes or so on highway; maybe never in minus 10?). Tranny has its own temp sensor; test it.
- about 40mph or lower
- pump gas driving style
- Fault: oxidized connectors =low voltage at TCU, tranny

"Some" tranny info: http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/748507/15

edit: when tranny lock engages, rpm drops 2-300 lower. After it has engaged, pressing slightly gas pedal does not jump engine rpm as in automatic. If pressed more, lock will disengage and box will change to lower gear.

a y-pipe can help mileage, as can all maintenance.
brakes, wheel bearings, axles, alternator, wheels, tires.
all of the above can and will affect your gas mileage
