VE engine rebuild

Just curious if anyone knows about how much an engine rebuild costs for a VE. Because i just bought a VE 5 speed that has a bad head gasket, so the owner says, and it gets oil in the water. So i am buying it at a pretty good price and it just needs some work. So any help on price would be greatly appreciated. Thanks as always

A head gasket is nowhere near a full rebuild...

a top end kit for these cars (which is what you'd need to fix a bad head gasket) is a couple hundred bucks.

to remachine the whole engine and start over with new pistons, rebuilt heads, etc.. that will cost you a couple thousand.

Would a bad headgasket cause oil to get in the water?

i agree those rims gotta go. and ill agree again with every one else. blown headgasket = antifreeze oil mix...if it gets real bad youll start crappin antifreeze out your tail pipe. LOL my transam did that.....

Looks like a clean car overall. The wheels are, as stated, HIDE-E-@ss.

Hope you have fun with the new aquisition.

If you are going to do the headgaskets, then talk to Matt, Jeff or Brian (Internetautomart). There are probably some other guys who have done that job, but these are your best bets.

If you were considering having the engine rebuilt, it is cheaper to buy a JDM VE and have that installed.

Straight up, a full rebuild is more expensive, but you would probably want to tack on several more hundred to get new VTCs put in or at least have them rebuilt.

Those wheels are gross. Good thing you don't have to keep them. Nice job finding a VE 5-speed at a pretty good price. Looks like they painted over the rear tail lights and had some kind of stereo system in it.

Would i be better off taking my car to a local shop to get the head gasket replaced? I mean i guess i could try and do it, but i guess sometimes i feel better knowing its right and im not responsible if its not.

Yeah, well i got lucky with the timing of that car, because i saved up like 700 dollars to do a 5 speed swap on my VG, and then i was looking on ebay just for fun and i saw that car and i was like hum... 100 dollars more and i get a whole car to go with that transmission and not to mention a larger engine. So if i get can like 2000 for my VG i will be quite happy.

If you take the car to the shop, you're looking at $1500 minimum for a head gasket replacement. they're going to scroo you on the labor... get a service manual and do it yourself and just take your time and make sure everything is right.
for a couple hundred in tools (get a GOOD torque wrench, not a $19 Harbor Freight one!!), then you can have the thing rebuilt in a weekend or so and save yourself a thousand in labor.

If you never worked on engines before, a VE30DE isn't the best one to start on. I'd look for a low miler replacement or jdm. If the hg is bad, who knows how the rest of the engine is. You could be doing alot of work on an engine that's a turd anyway.

Okay, this is probably going to be a crazy question, but my excitement is making me ask this... I can tow the car back from Georgia to my house because my dad will go with me in his Suburban, or i can drive it back, its like a 450 mile drive. Im sure most people would say that dont take chances and just tow it back, which is what i probably should do, but does anyone think its okay to drive it? Cause im like a little school boy right now, im all excited and dont know what to expect.

I'd say drive it, lol you only live life once. Just make sure your dad follows behind you.

Though, if you were mature and wiser, you would tow it. If I were you though, drivey drive drive!

it would be unwise to drive it... with a blown head gasket, you're mixing fluids in places tey shouldn't be mixed, and it's likely warped the heads already. the more you drive on a bad HG, the more damage you're doing to the engine.
Right now, you may be able to get away with pulling the heads, milling the deck, and putting it back together- 1 day job.

If you drive it home, then I'll bet my lunch money on you having to do a ground up rebuild on it.
