Dead Odo/Speedo
#1
Another question from the new clown (see also sagging door):
On my 90 SE, at about 80k, the odo began to work intermittantly (I think the trip odo got hung up - it always seemed to stop at xx2.9, and flicking the reset would free it up). Then it died completely, and the dealer replaced the entire gauge cluster.
Now, my second Odometer died. As it is no longer under warranty, I decided I could live without it. Then, my speedo started to die. It would work for 5 - 10 minutes on a cool day, and then just drop to zero and stay there until the car cooled off. In warm weather, it never works.
My mechanic says he is getting a signal off the speed sensor. I don't want to fork out $170 for a new gauge cluster and spend a few hours skinning my knuckles just to find out that wasn't the problem.
Has anyone had a similar experience? Is there anything else I can test?
Thanks,
kejace

Re: Sounds like your Speed Sensor
I imagine the speed sensor will be cheaper to try than a gauge cluster. Any advice before I dive in? I saw another post where someone had difficulty removing the old one.
(And where exactly is it located?)
Thanks,
KJ

Re: Re: Sounds like your Speed Sensor
All I can say is go to your local junk yard n see if they have N E guage clusters n switch em out for like $50/80 bucks.... If that dont work then u have a prob. with your speed sensor....good luck.... (hey then you'll have 2 sets of guage clusters,,,,...haha)

I know your pain
I've been having some similiar speedo problems. I thought I had it narrowed down to the speed sensor and replaced only to find it doesn't appear to be the cause.
The sensor is located on your transmission, firewall side and for me is under the oil filter. About the size of a small pill jar with wires coming out of it.
My problem appears to be now in the gauges somewhere.
